That's really tough, here a quick list:
Jim Brown - bigger, faster, stronger than his contemporaries. An athlete ahead of his time who dominated the NFL while he played.
Retired early to go to hollywood, or who knows what records he would have broken.
Earl Campbell - like JB above, he was bigger, stronger, and fast enough. I never saw JB play, but I have vivid memories of Earl Campbell dragging 2 and 3 "tacklers" in the 4th quarter of a game. They slowed him down, but it took a crowd to stop Earl towards the end of a game.
Barry Sanders - great runner, would own the rushing record if he hadn't retired early. not much of a receiver
Walter Payton - incredibly consistent over many years.
OJ - maybe the best runner of them all, not much of a receiver.
Jim Taylor - Going way back, but was part of the great Green Bay Packer teams.

The responders on this page definitely show thier age with their answers. All of the RBs they mention are great and surefire hall fo famers but Jim Brown is always talked about by football guys as the best ever RB. check out his stats and the short number of years he played.
Walter Payton is a close second.

Who's the only player in NFL history that could have a 5 yard loss turn into the "Play of the Night" on SportsCenter ??
Barry Sanders

William "Refridgerator" Perry
His TD in Super Bowl XX will be remembered for years.
But seriously, I'd go with Walter Payton. He had a great personality on and off the field (and paid his Ofensive Linemen well after 100 yard games). And nobody can forget the Super Bowl Shuffle
I think everyone cried the day he died.

a million) Ben Roethlisberger. all and sundry desires to declare he's a few super QB as a results of fact he's gained 2 SBs. A SB does not make you a brilliant QB, it skill you have been on a brilliant team, thats all. In his first SB he became into 9/21 for 123 yards and 2 INTs. He rather did no longer something to win that interest. the only TD bypass from the Steelers became into from Randle El. He had an detrimental interest yet they gained. final season he ranked twenty fourth in the league in passing. returned, no longer something specific. he's been on a sturdy team, thats the only reason he's been any stable. 2) Eli Manning. i comprehend a number of you attempt to guard Eil, and say he's sizable and all this. the certainty is that if his final call became into no longer Manning he does not be something. he's hyped to no end as a results of fact he's Peyton's brother, yet he hasn't had a similar fulfillment. He did win a SB, yet returned, triumphing one interest does not make you super, its a team interest, and Eli did no longer win it, the Giants as a team gained it. He has a occupation score of 76.a million, that's detrimental. His ending touch proportion is fifty 5%, returned, detrimental. His occupation stats are VERY close to to that of Michael Vick, and all of us is time-honored with Vick became right into a detrimental passer, the adaptation is that Vick could make performs together with his legs, Eli cant. Now, Eli did have a superb 12 months in 2008, he became into properly above his occupation averages in score and comp %, and he o.k. would be recuperating adequate to make him stable, yet he desires extra advantageous than a million stable season. 3) Tony Romo is a sturdy QB. I mean, seem at his stats. he's barely performed 3 seasons, yet he has a occupation score of ninety 4.7, ending touch % of sixty 3.6, does not throw loads of selections. He does properly, and he does not rather have stable WRs, nor does he also have a sturdy team. The arguement that he hasnt gained a brilliant interest is moot, as a results of fact its no longer purely him who wins the interest, its the team.

Walter Payton. he did all those great runs and games way before the infamous bears of the mid 80s.. no line, no QB, no coach, but still managed a hall of fame career. too bad he died at such a young age. a close second would be Eric Dickerson, but he had alot of support when he was with the rams (los angeles that is)

Emmitt Smith is the all-time leader in yards, but as far as ability to make things happen while running the football, I'd have to go with Barry Sanders. I'm too young to remember Jim Brown, but I won't deny he's in the top 5.

Barry Sanders was the funnest to watch most definitely. But I'd probly go with Walter Payton.
