warm milk and a hot shower/bath... try some lavender scented candles or oils. de-stress and do something really boring. read a book.
but if you're not asleep within 20 minutes - get up and do something boring. but don't get on the computer or watch tv.. it tricks the mind into thinking it's time to wake up. keep the lights dim.
i have a hard time sleeping too. but hopefully something helps.

First try to determine the cause, and attempt to resolve it. Also, you might try staying away from anything with caffeine, nicotine, or metabolism boosters, at least two hours before bedtime. Try setting a sleep schedule for yourself at the same time each night to regulate your body's agenda for sleep. Drugs are not the answer, over the counter or by script. There are natural herbs, and some foods, such as warm milk an hour before bedtime, that can help. Don't have cookies with it though, or cocoa, because the sugar will raise your metabolism and defeat the purpose. Once you resolve the issue that is keeping you awake, you should return to normal.

Lay off the Caffeine and Sugar after like 4:00pm, also drink lots of water. If you can't stop your mind from racing try keeping a note pad next to your bed, when you think of something you need to do write it down. And if all else fails try some herbal medications like Melatonin or Valerian they are natural sleep aids.

one of the symptoms of clinical depression which I have (which is a medical condition that has treatment), is insomnia. some things that help my depression are: not eating sugar, regular exercise, b-complex, multi and C vitamins (good quality --from gnc). something else that helped me a LOT was the book live right for your type (based on blood type)
something else that has it is bi-polar disorders --and these can be mild too.
just some ideas.

I have this problem and mine is caused by my over active mind. My mind will sometimes play music to the point where I almost hear it. But this mostly happens to me when I have something to do in the morning. It is like my mind hates me and wants me to fail. So in short the secret to falling asleep is having nothing to do in the morning.

I usually stay up until I get tired, and fall asleep.. lol
I get up, watch tv, or come onto the computer. You'll be tired the next day, but you'll be able to get back into your sleeping pattern again :)

I take a pill from GNC called Sleep Formula... helps me feels rested, but if you can't get to sleep in the first place, try melatonin... also at GNC or any other drug store.

GOOD LUCK SLEEPYHEAD!!
