Just to dispell the popular lie (and sorry if you hoped to restate it - and I guess that Mr. Swaggart may have told a lie by retelling one):

This bogus story was first circulated in 1882 by the wife of Sir James Hope (the Admiral of the Fleet), who claimed to have been with Darwin at the end when he lamented: "How I wish I had not expressed my theory of evolution as I have done!"

"I believe he never even saw her, but in any case she had no influence over him in any department of thought or belief. He never recanted any of his scientific views, either then or earlier... Not well known is that Darwin struggled for many years before publishing "The Origin of Species". He knew what it would mean to Christianity. Charles Darwin was a very religious man and only published after he was convinced that G-D had revealed a truth to him and it was his obligation to pass that knowledge on to future generations.
