Are we supposed to support our government?

Or is our government supposed to support it's people? I keep reading how I should listen to, and support my government, but I thought it was the other way around?

You are correct. Quoting from the US Declaration of Independence:

"That to secure these Rights [of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness], Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just Powers from the Consent of the Governed, that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these Ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or abolish it, and to institute new Government...."

The people do not exist to serve and praise the government. The government exists to serve and support the people.

No you are correct, the government SHOULD support the people. They are all elected officials and it's amazing how over the last 6 plus years that has turned around. It's like we have no voice any longer except the few weeks leading up to an election. Look at all the people deserting Bush now concerning Iraq, elections coming up in November!! Where were these people when it counted??? Like BEFORE we committed ourselves to this war?? This is supposed to be a democracy, we should listen but support ONLY when we feel it is in the best interest to do so. Simple as that.

you ought to enable Rush comprehend that any between the "examples" you cite would were bumped off at any time throughout a Republican administration. a million) were given any theory how the universal public college equipment all started? the folk needed it. 2) All social protection funds are required to be invested in authorities instruments. That reduces borrowing from overseas governments and is the most secure funding in the international. it may prevent as a lot funds as you want.IRA's, 401k's are honestly tax shelters accordingly the limitations. 3) a great number of electorate can and do carry guns. the authorities basically tries to regulate who owns them. How's that a nasty theory? 4) it fairly works each the position else so i love the conception. regrettably we are no longer doing that. 5) The seat belt regulation? fairly? you concentration on that a liberal intrusion? yet women persons won't be able to administration their own body, those who love one yet another won't be able to get married, you would possibly want to be drafted in to the defense force...it truly is all effective with you and Rush? 6) Even Rush might want to have an issue with some 12 3 hundred and sixty 5 days-olds procuring a six p.c... yet you want them to attempt this at the same time as smoking cigarettes or maybe pot? heavily? once you Rushed the abortion problem you lost any credibility.

This is a really good question that I think a lot of people miss. Our Government works for us (the people). We pay their salaries, we decide who gets hired (elected) and who gets fired (impeached). Through history our governments have proven many times to make decisions that are not in the interest of it's citizens. We should support our government to an extent until they stop listening to and blatently ignore what the people want to satisfy their own interests, at that point it is up to the people to fire these people and hire ones that will listen to their bosses (us).

  • Yes its the other way around, the government should listen to and support its people, but in rough times like this we need to support the government: "United we stand, divided we fall"

I think it goes both ways. We should support our gov in decent causes -- in WWII a lot of people rallied to support the nation in defeating the Axis, people also support positions or policies via contact with representatives. Also, in pursuit of terrorists and other criminals, we support the gov by watching out and reporting things that are illegal or dangerous.

The gov also has a responsibility for the public trust-- so liberties and responsibilities (e.g. national defense) outlined in the constitution are things the gov needs to do to support the public.

Alot of good quotes and answers. Yes we should all support our government, and they should support us. Although the government does alot of things that we may not like? we still need to support our stand on what they choose. Yes we are allowed to protest, and yes we are allowed to speak freely, but most of the "elected" officials in Washington are not listening unless you have something to give them in return.

Your right, the beauty of democracy is that if you don't like your government then you shouldn't support it, aka vote for the people who will change it to be the way you want it.

It's both ways. Our government should support us, but we in turn should respect the decisions they make. We don't always have the whole story (the story that they do have).
