Question about finance career field.?

I am fresh out of college with a public justice degree. I obtained a job for a large corporate bank working customer service for now and I really enjoy working with the investments. My company would pay for me to get an MBA and I would really like to because I do not have the business background I would like to go as far as I can with this company. I know I am entry level now but it is a foot in the door and I was just wondering any ideas what I should study for an MBA and also any career path advice. Thank you.

If you've found something you really enjoy, go for it! If your company will pay for your education--do it! Companies and jobs come and go but no one can ever take education away from you--it will always be a personal asset making you employable in your field. I've seen many high-level managers find themselves unable to get comparable jobs after being downsized because they accepted promotions rather than acquiring higher-level skills and knowledge--while their lower level ex-employees got better jobs because they continued educate themselves.

Talk with some of the people in your company who do the work you think you'd like to do and who have an appropriate background. Ask the happy ones for advice.

    Good luck!

I would recommend going as long as it to a strong program. The MBA will give you a foundation that will be useful at this company or elsewhwere.

The four basic pillars of the programs are Finance, Marketing, Gen. Management, and Operations. There are other, smaller specialties (such as Strategy or Entrepreneurship), but you will generally focus on one of the four main ones. Depending on what type of career you want to have with your company, you would focus on one of these and take some basic courses in the others. At a bank such as yours, I imagine that jobs in any of these categories would still work with investments, it really depends on what you want to do within the corporate struicture.

The first year of the program is mandatory coursework that covers all releavnat subjects. The second year is all electives and lets you focus your coursework. If you do choose the finance route, you will likely want to take the AFA exam, either before or immediately after the program. It's very hard, but if you can take courses beforehand to prep and get it done before the MBA, it can realy give you a leg up while searching for jobs.

If you are looking to take classes before entering an MBA program, I'd say statistics, finance, and econ are the ones most people have trouble with.

Well, First thing you need to do is which field attracts you, obviously you cannt choose the type industry now, as you are a fresher, but you can look for the area of profession where you find more interest like, Markeing, or Finance or HR etc., You need to decide this first. Once you finalised your area of interest then look for the courses which can make you fit in to that area. You can choose one from lot of options given in MBA, either Finance or Marketing or HR.As you have told you are most interested in Investments, I would suggest you to do MBA in Finance, then even you can look for some other courses like CMA or CPA etc

I think you should check into being a trust officer at your bank if they have a trust department. Check into getting a CFA certification and see if you can use that course work in getting your MBA.

With your interest in investments, the trust officer or perhaps portfolio manager (using your CFA) would be a good match.

If you really like numbers, an actuary job where you help design financial products like variable annuities could be a good fit.

    Best of luck to you.
