And how can I stop it? I have been driven mad by this every evening for weeks and nothing seems to help. Has anyone found a cure for this?

Get execrise by walking halfway home, drink as much water as you can, and eat a banana a day.

There are a number of answers which have yet to be proven.
One is nerves not getting something they need to metabolize the needed energy.
Another is chemical imbalance.
Another is pinched nerve endings or random nerve generation due to a restriction.
See there are lots of attempts at explanation, but none have been proven or you would have a cure.
It could be a combination of these which makes it even more complex.
You can start with eating a banana. Making sure your potassium level is up where it needs to be. Another thing you can try is a vitamin supplement known as creatin. It is used by muscle builders but is needed in the cell to allow the metabolizing of the energy. Without the correct amount of energy you can get cramps and spasms or a variety of effects.

Poor circulation, or you may have what is known as Restless Leg Syndrome. There is a site where you can read the symptoms, and if you fall into the category, I would see a doctor to make sure that is all it could be. The link is www.requip.com , I also did a google search under Restless Leg Remedies, and it brought up quite a few links that may be of interest to you. Good Luck!

You do not say if you suffer during waking hours or when asleep. This is normally a condition that occurs when asleep. There are a number of studies about this and many are looking for volunteers to help study the problem. The website below is the best one I am aware of.
I would suggest going to the doctor as this condition can be indicative of other more serious conditions.

Go for a good jog in the morning and/or the evening. Even just walking briskly every day will get rid of that problem. No meds.
