Will an ectopic pregnancy cause a possitive pregnancy test?

I have an IUD and have had no problems with it for the last 9 months but now I appear to be pregnant. I am new to my city and don't have insurance so it's not like I can just go see my gyn since I don't have one here. I will have to go to the health department and have an official preg test and then apply for a medical card (usually takes 4-6 wks to get one) and then try to find a doc that tkaes it.

My Q is if an ectopic (tubal) pregnancy can cause a possitive pregnancy test, becuase if it can then do you think I should just go to the ER and face the cost of the emergancy room visit? I know that a tubal pregnancy can do alot of damage and so I don't want to have to wait 6 weeks or more to find out. Do you know anyone who got pregnant with an IUD? At what point did they have it removed, if they did? How did it turn out? Don't worry about scaring me, I really need to know the facts. Thanks

Update:

Did no one read that I DON"T have a doctor to go to.

My suggestion is to see if there is a Planned Parenthood clinic in your area and go there first. The exam will cost you probably 100.00 (but you can call ahead and ask before going in because it may vary from region to region).

When I found out I was pregnant I did not have health insurance either so I went there because frankly it was the only place I could think of to go and it ended up being a less expensive alternative than going to my family doctor uninsured.

In addition to that they can give you some info on what to do next whether it's ectopic or not.

They helped me by giving me some insurance information that enabled me to get health coverage during my pregnancy and for my baby afterwards.

Yes an ectopic pregnancy will cause a positive pregnancy test. Are you having bad pains that make you think that it's ectopic? Otherwise, I would just wait until you get set up with a doc. Most women don't see the OB until they are 8 weeks to even find out if there is something wrong...so, you wouldn't be too different from most other women if you waited. I guess you have had a positive pregnancy test already? If so you can count on definately being pregnant (no false positives in these tests). Even though you have an IUD no birth control is 100% effective...so, I'd get that medicaid paperwork started. If you didn't want to wait it seems like a visit to the OB would be cheaper than an emergency room visit. You could even call around and find one that will take your medicaid once you get on it so you don't have to change Dr.s in the middle. Who knows Medicaid may even pay for the visit that you had to pay for before you got your card.

I really don't know anyone with an IUD. But I do know women who have had ectopic pregnancies. They don't just cause a lot of damage. They can kill you. Yes, it can cause a positive pregnancy test. My advice would be to go to the health department or Planned Parenthood. They will be able to check on your IUD for you and make sure it's not causing any problems, or even make sure it is still there '(They can fall out). If you were having an ectopic pregnancy, you would have severe abdominal pain, and pain in your shoulders. Be on the lookout for these symptoms, and get to the health department right away. If you have severe symptoms, it is best to go to the ER. You can always figure out the cost later. You won't be able to if you die. Sorry, to sound so harsh, but you said not to worry about scaring you.

Good luck. hope all is well

Get to the ER asap. An ectopic pregnancy is still a pregnancy and your body will still give a positive on a test because, you are pregnant. But the pregnancy could kill you if it's a tubal. You don't have 4-6 weeks. More like 4-6 days

My philosophy is if it worries you, don't wait. Go to your nearest clinic, they are either free or will put you on a payment plan, and until you get insurance you can go that route. Your body is important to you, and yes ectopic pregnancies can cause a positive pregnancy test, and here is a website that can help out with lots of info on ectopic pregnancies. There is really no 100% failsafe way to not get pregnant other than not having sex, so the odds of getting pregnant on a IUD are very low, but there's still that chance, as with any type of birth control.

Good Luck I hope everything works out for you.

You are fine I'm sure. If it was ectopic you would start spotting. I had very sharp pains around my ovaries and it is the ligaments stretching, preparing for the baby. there is a lot going on in there. It is best to get to a dr asap though, but you should be fine waiting a week. The faint test are normal too. If youre not that tired yet, just wait, it gets worse. about the tests, Mine was that way also, I even went to a clinic and they told me I wasn't pregnant and then after I went to another dr. the same day their test showed I was. If the line is there at all, you are prego!! Your hormone levels are low at the beginning and fluctuate so it is normal. Congrats on the pregnancy, dont worry, unless you have past problems you are fine im sure.

if the pregnancy is ectopic it will still register as a positive pregnancy. the problem is that as the fetus grows in that small space the more it is putting your health in jeaopardy.

If you suspect that this is the case you absolutely will have to go to the er- if it ruptures your tube you will be in all kinds of pain and have internal bleeding etc.... you will require medical attention to save your life. if it is ectopic, the pregnancy can not be saved.

call around and see if yo can get in touch with a clinic... they may ask about symptoms etc... but if they too suspect that it is ectopic - they will get you in to see them. you will likely go to the head of the line.

I understand that you don't have insurance... do a little researching to find out what hostpitals (usually teaching ones) will accept patients without insurance. True you may not need to go there today but if the pain hits, you will not be able to log onto the internet.

a friend who had an ectopic preg. went in to the hostpital thinking she was having a miscarriage.... when she found out she had to have the tube removed and she now has only one ovary/tube left. it was difficult for her but she was able to conceive a child (twice) since then. from what she described the pain, you would not be able to endure it or ignore it.

I wish you the best. (go to a clinic) this is a serious enough deal that they will take you seriously.

Yes, ectopic pregnancies will cause a positive test. They are no different than regular pregnancies except for the fact that the embryo is attached inside the tube. Go to the health department. They can direct you from there. Unless you have the $$ for the ER, then go that route.

Yes, an ectopic pregnancy will cause a positive result on a pregnancy test. The fact that you're in a high risk category for ectopic pregnancy really means you need to go and get a more thorough test.

There's some good information on the page I've listed below.

    Best luck :)

Take an over the counter urine test. It will show if you are preg. Yes, I know someone who got preg. on an IUD and baby was fine. They found out early so they could remove the IUD before the baby got too big. Before you go the the ER, make sure you are preg. Also, find a OB/GYN in your town and go there instead of ER. It will be much cheaper.

    Good luck
