Smell of burnt rubber inside garage. Probably the AC Unit?

I don't keep any cars in there. A faint smell of burnt rubber is noticeable as soon as you enter garage. It seems to happen when the AC unit has been on. 2 yr old house. I haven't had maintenance on AC for a long time... I already called them for an appointment. What do you know about AC's smelling like burnt rubber?

It could be a number of things. The blower motor could be going bad. Sometimes the windings in the motor get hot and smell like that. I would be really cautious of a burnt rubber smell coming from the unit. It might be smart just to shut it off until the tech arrives so that it doesn't cause any further damage or start a fire.

Your unit may be overheating. Are you changing the filter regularly? I sell real estate and many times this routine maintenance is overlooked which results in a shortened life-span for your AC. Don't be afraid to remove the door and look to see if there is a wire that is shorting out. If y ou are a complete novice, call a technician today as this may be a fire hazard.

Check the Fan Motor it could be overheating due to no lubrication. Insulation of the armature or field coil could have been toasted, since the insulation is shellac it would smell similar to a burn rubber if subjected to extreme heat like overheating.

question to you......how do you enter the garage? a door? or open it with a garage opener? if its the latter I suspect a belt on your garage door opener is wearing.
