alchemists were looking for the Philosopher's Stone, which supposedly would allow one to transmute (transform) all metals into gold. They were doing this using mainly chemical reactions, so there was no chance they could ever succeed (and even with nuclear physics, it is not like you can at will change an atom of any metal into gold, not to mention large quantities of it).

however in order to be able to do all this they made huge numbers of experiments, mainly of chemistry but also physics, and recorded results in a methodical manner. So in a sense they were the fathers of modern experimentation.

now, what about believing? Can one believe, today, that it is possible to transmute metals into gold, by contact with a special stone? I don't think so, unless one refuses to accept pretty much all of modern science.

    hope this helps

Sometimes I have to wonder just how friggin' simple minded someone has to be to believe that a fantasy movie is real.
