Here is a link to a website that shows a the history of left and right-sided driving by country.

In America, we drive on the right side of the road because teamsters driving freight wagons sat on the left rear horse of the team in the 1700s. This allowed them to use the right hand for the whip. By driving on the right, they could make sure that they did not run into the wheels of an oncoming freight wagon. Steering wheels in automobiles were originally on the right hand side of the car so the driver could make sure he did not run off the road or hit a curb. The steering wheel changed sides with the Ford model-T and have been on the left since.

We drive on the right because that is the side of the road that everyone else going their way is using. When they buy a car it has a steering wheel on the left so that they can see the oncoming cars on their left. Also all the road arrows and signs are positioned for drivers on the right. Could the government decide to have everybody drive on the left to match the British and then change all the signs and the rules and require everyone to get cars with a steering wheel on the right? - don't hold your breath and wait for that.

in america they drive on the right side - the steering wheel is on the left. it happened because stage coach drivers would be on the left side and the guy who was "shot gun" would be on the right side of the stage coach. that way he could grab out with is right hand to pick up a mail bag or some such thing from the *side* of the road while the driver kept the reins. . . . in england the driving is on the left because knights would usually draw their swords with their right hand as well - but rather than the side of the road - they were concerned with using their weapons against *on-coming* horsemen. So they stayed over to the left side of the road so that they could use their swords with their right hand against the other horseman if necessary. . . i am an american, but live overseas much of the year. when I am in america I drive on the left side only when I forget to switch over! ;-)
