For Windows, I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs.

This double whammy will help keep your Windows computer safe and running faster.  Yes, I would use FireFox to retain safe. 

With Linux, you don't need any.  FireFox is awesome.

In both cases, you do need to select a good Firewall.

Firefox is a browser and probably has its own adware protection as does IE and Yahoo!'  Ad-Aware is a free program, but the top of the line is Norton Internet Security, which does just about everything.
