Cymbalta vs. Zoloft?

I've been on Zoloft 50 mg for a year now, and up till lately it's been pretty effective. Lately the depression seems to be back, along with this overall achey feeling. Cymbalta supposedly works on physical symptoms of depression. Anyone have any experience with it?

Update:

Yes, I am taking the Zoloft exactly as prescribed. I am asking the question to get some feedback on people's experience with Cymbalta before I go to my dr. to discuss. Thanks.

I have no experience with Zoloft; I do, however, take Cymbalta for clinical depression. It is in a class of meds called SSRIs. The brain releases a chemical called serotonin which make you feel that "happy" feeling. Cymbalta is one of those meds which block the re-uptake of serotonin...basically pressing those already released into service, and not allowing them to be reabsorbed to where they were first released. These chemicals are called neuro-transmitters. There are different drugs made that act the very same way as Cymbalta. Conversely, there are also drugs which basically act in the reverse called SNRIs. They are also prescribed for clinical depression, among other reasons. And, they inhibit the re-uptake of norepinephrine, also a chemical released from the brain, which can cause depression, or "unhappy" feelings. Wellbutrin is an example of this type med, among others. I have had ltd. success with both types, but better with Cymbalta. It is not a miracle drug as the tech reps from the manufacturer would have the doctors believe. I am in alot of physical pain. Cymbalta is touted as being a painkiller, especially for neuropathy; it hasn't helped me in that regard, but to be fair, my pain is severe and Cymbalta is not meant for my type of pain. Overall, I think that Cymbalta is the best so far that I have experienced, but as I have had some great days (I mean 2-3), I still have the clinical depression- the same as I have had- for the most part. I hope this helps you...bottom line is that Cymbalta is highly recommended by some; hated by some; and then there is my assessment. Talk to your Dr., for sure. But remember, the manufacturer of the meds have a lot of influence upon these guys. If you feel that, after 2-3 months, this med is not working for you, then by all means tell the good Dr. that. Ask him to reconsider your meds and remember that YOU have to take an active roll in your recovery. My best med so far has been the weekly sessions with my therapist, and meditation/prayer. Best of Luck to you for recovery and health...

Source(s): Look up Cymbalta and Zoloft on your internet...just type in the name of the med and enter...often there are others listed with whom you may interface.

You may need to go up on Zoloft. You are on a very low dose. I take both Zoloft (300 mg.) and Cymbalta (30 mg.) every morning. The Zoloft really helps my depression, and the Cymbalta eases my achy body pains (fibromyalgia).

I've heard that Paxil has horrible withdrawl as does Effexor and Cymbalta. I think Zoloft or Lexapro would be fine, or even Prozac which probably has the least withdrawal or side effects, but also takes longer to get into and out of your system.

I was on Prozac for several years and it quite working. Some do after awhile. I currently take Lexapro, but am going to ask my doctor about Cymbalta because I have severe pain from fibromyalgia and Lyme disease. I am hoping. Do research at the Cymbalta website, then take it to your Dr. Never stop a antidepressant without your Dr's advice.

Here is what I know, celexa did not help me at all. Paxil does but it is an older ssri and there are better ones now and the withdrawal can be extreme. My mother and husband and two friends are on lexipro and it works great for them, but it is expensive. I have also heard good things about zoloft, but not as much as lexipro. Also you might want to bear in mind they don't get fully into your system in 4 weeks so the panic attacks might have happened anyway without the zoloft.

Two years ago, I was on Zyprexa. In one month, I was in the hospital twice. Once for pancreatitis, and diagnosed as diabetic, the second time with neuopathy. I had to go to a nursing home after this time, as I was unable to walk without a walker, and the pain was so severe that it was unbearable. I was switched to Cymbalta, and now I get a twinge sometimes, but no more diabetic pain. I believe that the Cymbalta is a good drug, for me, and that Zyprexa should be banned from the market, period. Of course, that is just my opinion. My father was put on Zyprexa for dementia, and it really helped him. So, I can't put it down completely. But my choice is Cymbalta. Good luck, I hope the best for you.
