Instrument panel/Stereo installation lighting problem (84 s-15 jimmy)?

I installed a new radio in my 1984 GMC s-15 jimmy, and now the lights on the instrument panel no longer turn on with the headlights. I'm fairly sure I know the problem, but not the solution. I didn't find a wiring harness at an auto parts store, so I did it with the wires. Anyways, on the old (stock) radio, there was a place for a "LAMP" wire, I had no idea what this was, but I knew the new radio didn't need it so I didn't bother to look into it. I taped over the wire and left it unplugged. I assume this is the problem. I have no idea what I'd hook that into to make my instrument panel light up. If you know this is irrelevent, do you know what else would make the light not come on? Help?

First off I would go back thew and check anything that could have come unpluged. The panel lights should not have anything to do with the stereo so you may have just bumped somthing durring instalation. I don't quite understand the harness delema but, if you instaled this stereo "unconventionaly" you may have stolen you panel power to power your head unit. The last thought I have for you is that you may be "shorting/grounding" the panel power out. My suggestion is to grabe a multi-meter and find out where you lost your power at. If you think this is to much for you I would go to a shop and ask for help most mechanics enjoy solving problems. try not to get charged for this it's not that big of a deal. Hit me back with what you find I'll try to help.
