There are various ways to treat arthritis of the knees, and all depend on severity, age, and other factors.

If you are in your 60's the best way to treat it, if it is really severe, is by joint replacement surgery. However, knee replacement surgery is a lot more complicated than say hip replacement surgery, and once you have the joint replaced, its very difficult, in the future, to do it again should the primary replacement fail. In younger, more active people, a knee joint replacement can wear itself out within a relatively short period of time. If this happens, its EXTREMELY difficult to have another replacement, as during the original surgery, lots of drilling and cutting of bone will have taken place in order for the replacement to fit, that another replacement is unlikely to do very well.

Some younger patients with severe arthritis of the knee, are sometimes offered a "uni-compartment knee replacement". In this surgery, only one portion of the joint is replaced, meaning that the patient may have a full joint replacement at a later date, should one be required.

At the moment, the best course of action would be to see your doctor, and lose weight. The knee takes a lot of strain, and if you are significantly over-weight, this can contribute to any exitsying arthritis. You could also try taking supplements, such as cod liver oil, or glucosamine. These have had reasonably good results in the treatment of arthrits, but obviously, see your doctor for advice before taking them.

Long term anti-inflamatories or pain killers can do more harm than good. They will only mask the symptoms, and while they are masked, its possible to do more damage.

    Hope this helps.

Its not easy, but cod liver oil is good, it helped my mum loads, also yoga is good but you can make it worse if you don't take it easy as I found out! The idea with yoga unlike other exercise is you don't strain or force anything, it takes regular and gentle practice to work. Heat lamps are also good.

You should avoid joging and use exercise's like cycling and swiming to build up the leg muscles so they take take the strain instead of the knees.

Hello. I am no expert. But what about giving yoga a go. May take a year or so of dedicated practice but to change the status quo often takes dedication, and application.

try taking Glucosamine Sulfate, it works, but don,t expect an overnight miracle, it takes a short time before you start to notice the pain subsiding and feeling better.

Hyaluronic acid from a vitamin store works great and starts to work quickly.

Lose weight and take anti-inflammatories, there is no actual cure just ways to make them more confortable!!
