How can I tell if my dog is retarded?

My dog just won't learn anything. I think he's retarded.

Below is a website that has instructions so you can test your dog's intelligence at home.

Every dog learns differently. Some require numerous repetitions, while others learn after just a few sessions. Some need treats to be motivated, and others respond better to a training, pinch, or shock collar. Different dog breeds learn differently too. A hound will be easily distracted by different sights and smells, so training sessions will need to be kept short. A herding type breed will need a firm leader, but should learn quickly. A toy or terrier breed might need to be exercised for a hour prior to a training session, because they are so energetic and can't focus well.

You can always take your dog to obedience classes. They have fairly inexpensive classes at most Petsmart and Petco stores.

    Hope this helps!

There are a few real keys to dog training, whether you are trying to train your dog to come when called, sit, stop barking or any other behavior. Understanding their importance is critical to achieving rapid results that are long lasting and help develop the bond between you and your dog. Read more here https://bitly.im/KKc5J

The first is simple; you must win your dogs mind. If you don’t achieve this first then you will be struggling the all the way. When I talk about winning your dogs mind what I really mean is that your dog looks to you for all the decisions. Before you do anything else watch one of the amazing video sites that show you the 5 Golden rules to establishing yourself as the pack leader. If you aren’t putting these in place then you are setting yourself up to fail. Just at the crucial point where you really want your dog to listen they will go and do their own thing. For sure your dog may play ball occasionally or even most of the time, you may even have a dog that is obedient 99% of the time, however if you want a dog who always listens to you and does as you ask then you need to win your dogs mind.

The second key to success is to motivate your dog. It is really important that you discover what it is that your dog enjoys both in terms of exercise and play but also in terms of a reward. If you can make the experience enjoyable then you will both achieve more and look forward to training.

Some dogs love to fetch, others love agility, and other dogs simply love obedience training, or swimming out into water and retrieve. At least to start with find out what your dogs love is and help them develop this, what I am saying is work with your dog. The other point to recognize is to make training enjoyable reward your dog.

First off, you need to exercise your dog. Before trying to train him, take him on a good run, so he doesn't have to focus on simply how hyper he is. Second - get control of him. Learn what motivates him. Would he rather be scratched behind the ears, given a treat, or have a ball tossed, or a short game of tug-of-war? When he gets really hyper when you are trying to work with him, don't be "hyper" back. Grabbing at him, yelling at him, and chasing him will only work him up. Make sure he is on a leash, and when he starts hopping around and being crazy, pull him up to you, put your hand firmly on the back of his neck, either don't say anything at all, or speak to him in a low voice. He needs to relax. Don't go shreiking "good boy" as this will just get him all worked up again. Patience and consistancy is the key. He needs to learn that the fun ends whenever he gets too hyper, so he'll better learn to control himself. Get yourself enrolled in basic obedience classes - this will help you learn how to train your dog. Once you have a few commands down, it should only get easier. Good luck.

You might want to take him to the vet to see if he has a hearing problem.
