Everyone in my house is asleep and I just burned myself?
I leaned over a ceramic hair straightener and it burnt my elbow in a straight line, like the skin is peeling on both sides. Is there any household item I can put on it bymyself? Does this sound major enough to wake someone up?

i'm a nurse in trauma icu...
do not put ANY food products, oils,or lotions on the burn!! these will all trap heat inside and can cause infection...
wash it well with warm water and mild soap-soaps with dyes or perfumes in it can irritate the burn.
apply aloe vera lotion to the burn and cover it with gauze wrap if you have it-if not then leave it open to air after applying the aloe vera gel. you can wrap it in a washcloth if that's all you have. this will help keep new germs out of the burn area.
if the burn is forming a blister or starts to drain liquid then i would wake someone for a trip to the e.r-these are signs of a second degree burn and you'll need silvadene cream to treat it-only a doctor can provide you with this.
for pain take ibuprofen. 200-400mg every 6 hours but no more than 1200mg in 24 hours. you can also take tylenol-same dose but the ibuprofen has an anti-inflammatory in it to help reduce swelling.
make an appointment with in 24 hours to see your doctor so he can make sure you are not showing any signs of infection and to also make sure you don't need special cream to treat the burn.
good luck to you and try to relax and get some sleep-it doesn't sound as bad as i'm sure it looks!!

Go with Nurse "prncessang228" she's exactly right.
You can wake up your family if you wish, but with a burn the damage is already done and it's not going to get any worse at this point.
It's not like a serious cut, where you might need stitches and have to seek immediate medical attention.
The only thing to do now is treat the discomfort.
And thanks to great people on Yahoo Answers such as "prncessang228" who are willing to help someone in need no matter when or how.
It use to be that people who became Doctors, wanted to do so for humanitarian reasons, rather then the McMansion, the Mercedes and the two or three Trophy wives.
Nurses are the only true humanitarians left within today's medical industry.
My hat's off to todays nurses they are the true care givers.
Hope you feel better soon, "Dansons la Carmagnole's" inshallah

1st degree burns are usually accompanied by redness and some swelling of the skin.
Treat a minor burn by first cooling the affected area. If possible, keep the injury under cool running water for at least 10 minutes. If running water is not available place the burn in a container of cold water such as a bucket, tub or even a deep dish. Using a cool, wet compress made of clean cloth will also work if nothing else is available. Keeping the burn cool will reduce pain and minimize the swelling. If the injury is on the part of a body where jewelry or snug clothing is present, carefully remove them before it begins to swell. Apply a moisturizing lotion or Aloe Vera extract and dress the burnt area with loosely wrapped sterile gauze.
2nd degree burns will result in deeper, more intense redness of the skin as well as swelling and blistering.
This type of burn should be treated just as a 1st degree burn but because the damage to the skin is more extensive, extra care should be taken to avoid infection and excessive scarring. Replace the dressing daily and keep the wound clean. If a blister breaks use mild soap and warm water to rinse the area. Apply antibiotic cream such as Neosporin to prevent infection before redressing in sterile gauze.
3rd degree burns may appear and feel deceptively harmless as the victim may not feel much pain due to complete destruction of all layers of skin and tissue as well as nerve endings. The damaged area may appear charred or ash-color and will instantly start to blister or "peel".
If the victim's clothing is on fire, douse him with non-flammable liquid. Dial 9-1-1. Do not remove burnt clothing from the victim as this will expose open wounds to the elements and potential infection. If possible, cover the victim's injuries with wet sterile cloth to reduce the pain and swelling. If you notice that the victim is going into shock and loses consciousness, you will need to perform CPR.

Do NOT listen to the person who said "butter" Trust me Butter will hold the heat in and cause you more pain. DONT USE BUTTER!!!!!
If the skin is peeling off it sounds like you should wake your parents or someone up. You don't want it to get infected.
DON'T DO THESE THINGS AND HERES WHY:
What Not To Do!!!!!
DON'T:
Cover a deep burn with cotton balls or fluffy bandages
BECAUSE: Cotton can stick to the wound. Instead, use dry gauze or a clean cloth.
Apply butter, toothpaste, or egg whites to a burn.
BECAUSE: These folk remedies do not speed healing and can attract dirt to the wound, possibly leading to infection.
Break blisters. BECAUSE: This could lead to an infection
Cool extensive burns with water. BECAUSE: This could cause a dangerous drop in body temperature.
*DON'T DO ANY OF THOSE THINGS!!!!******

wrap it loosely in a cool wet towel for 30 minutes- if a blister raises, depending on the size, you may want to have it looked at by a doctor, but it is unlikely they can do anything for you except maybe give you some pain medicine. Take an over the counter medication now if you have one for the pain as long as you aren't allergic to it. Keep it clean. Don't use ice or anything like butter. If it is just read and not cracked or bleeding you can put a sunburn medication like solarcane on it to help with the pain.

First run COLD Water over the burned area to cool the skin and stop the burning- soak the burned area in cold water for approx 5 minutes---do not apply any ointment but wrap the burned area in a wet cloth-not a towel or blanket-but a pillowcase or strip from a bedsheet will do-soak in water -get out xces water and wrap arm-so all the burned skin is covered with wet cloth-go to emergency room-nearest or call 911------If you want to make sure necessary to go to emergency call the Emergency room and tell them what happened and they will advise you. You can take Tylenol for pain

some ice will help.
then if you have any ointments that should help, check the medicine cabinet. look for ointments that help with burns and rashes. this is for keeping the itching and pain down and the skin moist.
you're going to be in pain for the night so try your best to ease it.
keep the ice on it from time to time that should help with swelling and the pain.
you gave yourself a good burn but cold water and ice shall help calm it down.
you'll peel now.. just get that pain out of the way.
oh and drink some water also.

Cool water compresses only. Egg whites and butter and anything else are dangerous to put on an open wound. Ask your parents to look at it. If it's blistering, then it's a second degree burn. I doubt you would get a 3rd degree burn where all the skin is missing. If it is, then go to a hospital

If there is some peroxide in the house, use it right away. You want to keep infections down. Next, put cocoa butter on it, if there is any. You want to keep it dry and allow the air to get to it tonight. In the morning, show an adult just to make sure itsnot worse than what you think. However, if it becomes too painful and/or bleeding, then by all means wake someone up. You may need further adult assistance and/or need to seek medical attention.

Put plain mustard on the burn and it will take down the pain and stop a lot of the scarring. I does sound weird, I know; but it actually does work. This was something I learned years ago when I was in high school. One of my friends was at her boyfriends house with his parents and grandmother and she went to take something out of the oven with the old fashioned flat potholders. When she stood up she hit the tops of her hands on the upper electric element in the oven. Her boyfriends grandmother had her wash the burns under cold water and then she covered the burns with mustard. The pain lessened and she did not get any scarring. The mustard seed itself has properties that will draw out the heat and slow the scarring. Good luck and watch out for those hot hair items..ouch. Please do not use peroxide, it has been proven to actually eat away at healthy tissue, and will actually make scarring worse, and slow the healing process. My son is a doctor, don't use peroxide.
