Try portable dvd players from nextbase.
They have a whole host of features. the topline model (SDV1102) has a 10" 16:9 lcd screen, top-loading disk tray, AV in/out, an FM transmitter if you want to expand the sound, and it can read anything!
Check it out at next-base.com
I really love these players because they're not choosy about region locks, or if you're playing from a recordable dvd :-)

my favourite is Sony DVP-NS55P/S:Reviews of the DVP-NS50P called it the best basic DVD player, with intuitive menus, easy setup and excellent picture quality. Like its predecessor, the DVP-NS55P includes support for 5-channel surround sound, as well as Dolby Digital sound. This no-frills player handles rented movies as well as MP3s and JPEG photo files burned onto CDs, audio CDs and home-burned DVDs.

I don't have a favorite, cause I have only used one, and it worked well. I don't know the model number or anything...just that it was a Panasonic or Sony...something like that...Its small, so don't have BIG expectations
