Who is Islams equal to the Pope?

One of the Islamic leaders who has power equal to the pope is Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei. He (not President Ahmadi-Nejad) is the commander-in-chief of Iran's military and under the preamble of the constitution of Iran, "The Assembly of Experts...fram[ed] the Constitution...[after input] by the government...with the hope that this century will witness the establishment of a universal holy government and the downfall of all others."

One of the goals of Ayatollah Khamenei is the foundation of a Shiite Islamic khalifah from Iran to Lebanon and then the extablishment of the "universal holy government".

In order to understand that Islam is a religion of peace, you must study the Islamic scholars like Ibn Taymiya (1268-1328) and Sayyid Qutb (1906-1966). Ma'alim fi-l-Tariq (Milestones) was Qutb's manifesto, other elements of Qutbism are found in his works Al-'adala al-Ijtima'iyya fi-l-Islam (Social Justice in Islam), and his Quranic commentary Fi zilal al-Qur'an (In the shade of the Qur'an). Qutb heavily influenced the al-Ikhwan (Muslim Brotherhood) established by Hassan al-Banna in 1928 which was the paradigm for Islamic militancy.

The theory is that Islam will supplant all governments and religions. Those who refuse to submit to Islam will be subdued and pay jizyah (submission tribute) similar to what Byzantine Emperor Manuel II Palaiologos who was quoted by the pope was forced to pay to stay alive. Those who refuse to submit or pay jizyah will be eliminated. Then as all submit to Islam and obey shariah law everyone will be in lockstep and peace will prevail. It is quite simple. The perfect way to create utopia through submission and obedience to the "true" religion of Islam. Peace in Islam is simply the absence of war but not necessarily the presence of justice.

There is no pope-like figure in Islam. No man can carry the burden of another man's deeds and that's why each person is in Islam is in their own relation with God. Muslims don't have confession because his sins are his own business and should be discussed with God only. What the pope said was wrong and nothing will change that. But some Muslims' response was uncalled for as well. Usually the most peacefull Muslims fly under the radar, hiding their good deeds because of their humbleness. Thanks for the concern. Peace.

Islam does not have a grand pooba. The Koran is Islam.

Islam has no formal organization or structure. Pretty much anyone can preach, regardless of qualifications (or lack of them). It's pretty much just a popularity contest as to which one you listen you -- same as televangelists.
