Well, a horizontal or vertical shift is when the geometric shape is moved up, down, right or left. During a shift, the shape will be upright or will not ever end up rotated. However, in a translation, the geometric shape could be turned as a result of the translation. Translations have definitions such as (x,y)--> (2-x, 5-y) By applying this type of translation to all the coordinates, you could obtain a different result than from a vertical or horizontal shift.
