Cannot logon to computer running XP Pro SP2?

At the Welcome screen I type in the password, and the next statement is a Logon Message box stating: You cannot log on to the system right now the Domain <name of computer> is not available.

I can get in through safemode, and system restore has not helped. There is a similar situation with Windows 2000 on an MS Bulletin, but not sure this is the right fix for XP SP2. Any Thoughts?

Un-necessary answer for people just looking for points will be reported as Abuse, so answers like "Just, Buy a new one, GOSH!" or answers like "no" with no followup info or similar will be the ones marked as abuse. This is because I really need help with this and do not want to filter through 80 answers of "I don't know." before I get a real answer. And no I am not being a snob, just want to get my computer working. Thanks!

Update:

I do not have a domain/network in my house so I am just trying to logon to the PC itself.

getting some great answers here.

Not sure how to switch from workgroup to Domain mode ( never had to)

Also I did do a Group Policy analyization, and it could not find much of anything??

Update 2:

I did try to run Symantec in safe mode, but got something to the effect of:

"Symantec cannot access scan engine"

Update 3:

Going through safe mode attempting to change network type to home had no effect.

Also I did as suggested below and made a new account name from the welcome screen, and it doesn't show up on the welcome screen, so I cannot login tothe machine with it.

My wife's profile is also missing from the welcome screen, but her profile is visible in Windows Explorer?

Any other suggestions?

According to the error message you get, it seems that your computer cannot connect to the desired domain. This may be caused be several problems, e.g. you modified something in your network preferences that makes your login impossible. In safe mode I guess you have the default parameters to networking so that's how it's working...

Have you checked that your domain is really accesible (by pinging the Domain Network Server?). Are you using Automatic Windows Update? It may download and install files that mess with this issue. Are you using a firewall? It may also be caused by it because in safe mode it is not loaded.

You may try un- than reinstalling your network adapters and see what's not loaded in safe mode to identify what interferes with your normal logon.

when you are at the log on screen click options that should open up a third line on the log on window. make sure your domain name is listed in there before trying to log on. you can click the drop down arrow and you will get a choice to log onto your domain or xxxxx(local computer).

if you can get in through safe mode there might be some kind of driver conflict not letting you log on for some reason. because all safe mode does is disable alot of drivers and lets you log on with only whats needed. have you installed something new hardware software.

another thing you can try is unjoining the domain and rejoining the domain. you can log on to the local machine as the admin and do this.

    good luck

    additional details:

if norton cant access scan engine while in safe mode sounds like something is wrong with norton. if you have the installation cd i would try to remove norton and reinstall it. actually i would remove it then try to sign on if you can then that was your problem. then reinstall it. i was working on a computer once for about 2 hours with similar sign on issues and it turned out to be a corrupt anti virus preventing the log on.

    more details:

ill keep adding them as i think of them

have you looked in the event viewer

go into control panel-administrative tools-event viewer-

there are 3 sections here application, security, and system

look in all 3 you should mostly be concerned with anything that has a red x by it but if you have alot of yellow eclamations check them out too.

try this-if it is saying the domain is not available then lets try joining it to a new work group this is very easy and you wont lose any data dont worry.

right click on my computer-click properties-click the computer name tab- click network identification- the wizard will begin click next-mark the one that says this computer is for home use-click next-the computer will tell you it needs to reboot-after reboot hopefully no more problems

i may well be shocked if 128MB of RAM is all of the gadget has. If it got here right now from Dell with XP put in, there could have been a minimum of 256MB and maximum possibly 512MB. Dell would not sell a gadget with below Microsoft's pronounced minimum reminiscence requirement. basically a thought. In activity supervisor, it extremely is familiar for XP to have everywhere from 35 to 60 approaches working good after booting The gadget Idle technique could be a minimum of ninety% after booting. Watch which technique is ingesting the CPU once you attempt to open say administration Panel, this could provide you a clue as to what's inflicting the subject. in case you probably did not do an entire reformat earlier reinstalling XP the virus's and different "badware" will nonetheless be there. make particular that interior the BIOS the virus protection decision is grew to become on. as a strategies because of the fact the pagefile, that's going to be set to one million.5 X the RAM, so in case you had 256MB, it may well be 384MB. it extremely is achievable the pagefile is corrupted. Set it to 0, reboot and reset to the suitable selection, the pagefile would be recreated once you boot after resetting it. so a strategies as getting greater RAM, Dell can inform you the suitable style with the help of giving them your serial selection(on the case), then you extremely be attentive to for particular your getting the suitable stuff. The could in all probability make particular how lots the gadget shipped with besides.

looks like you didn't shut down your computer correctly and your user profile got corrupted, that's why it works fine in safe mode and when you try to login to your account it can't login. If that's the case then I guess you can just go to Safemode and add new user account in control panel.

Dude, your machine has been hacked to use in a bot net, I would suggest trying to start up in safe mode and run all antivirus and adware killing programs!
