Was it stupid not to plug in my old laptop for a year?
I bought a new computer last year, so I haven't been using my old laptop - and thus haven't had it plugged in - in almost a year. A few nights ago, I went to start it up, thinking I might want to wipe the memory to give it away or recycle it or something, but it wouldn't start up, even with the power cord plugged in.
The battery was completely drained. So was my spare. I tried charging one for an hour or two, but it didn't show any signs of life.
So what do you do in a situation like this? I don't want to get rid of it before I've made sure there's no personal information on the hard drive, but I'm not going to buy a new battery for a six-year-old computer!

In 4 words "Yes it was stupid", but a common thing to happen. You battery will only last so long if left alone for too long. Like your car, if you left it over winter it would probably need a new battery.
You can take it to a computer shop and ask them to take out the hard drive..... Then get a hammer and Destroy the hard drive the only way to make sure no data remains.

I had the same thing happen to me Leave it plugged in for a few days, let the battery recharge. I know it seems like if you plug it in, recharging the battery shouldn't matter, but for some reason it does. After that, Try again, it will work.

You could take the HDD out and plug it into your current comp. The batteries is most likely fried. I would call it stupi though. I would plug in an old laptop if i had a new one.

If you are not willing to buy a new battery then just remove the harddrive before selling it. You can buy a cheap used one off eBay or craigslist

i would assume you dont care about the info on the drive if you havent used it for a year. so you can take out the HD and destroy it and give away or recycle the laptop. good luck
