The bill doesn't actually ban online poker. it bans transfers to gambling sites. THat part of it will take 270 days.
Some poker sites have banned US companies, some haven't. you want to play sign up at a site like Absolute and show some support to the sites standing up to Bush. http://www.absolutepoker.com/main.asp?host=a_77a_1...

The ban should not hurt online poker players in the US too much. Sure there will be some companies that will withdraw from the market, but not too many. Online gambling is huge in the US and worth billions, online casinos and poker rooms don't want to lose that market if they can help it.
When the law is signed into being it will be nine months before it has any teeth. The way it is looking all it will do is require people to use companies like Neteller to transfer their funds to and from the poker site. Use of bank accounts and credit cards based in the US will be impossible, although frankly that's almost the way it is anyway.
This whole move is a despicable and sleazy move from Bill Frist, and his actions tell you all you need to know about the way he does business. Attaching a bill about gambling to an anti terrorism port security bill is disgusting and unnecessary.
It is abundantly clear that Americans do not want to ban online poker. In a recent study only 18% of Americans said that the federal government should ban online poker. But sadly politicians are by and large a55holes and they don't give a crap what their voters think. Just as long as they can win an election, they have no interest in being a public servant.

Regardless of what happens with the bill, it will not completely stop online gambling. Basically, in order to stop online gambling, the entire world would have to be on board, and they are not. The internet is not just for the US, and the other countries around the world operating these gambling sites will not be affected by this bill. The main impact that this bill will have will be the jurisdiction of US banks doing direct business with known gambling sites. There are many ways around this (one way being the purchasing of "phone cards" -- then "cashing in" the phone cards for the gambling money).

It is effective immediately, however the banks and regulators will take a while to implement the law. Most likely the big online casinos will close their doors to USA players immediately once the law is signed.
If you want to keep gambling online, you better pick a new country to live in soon. You can also voice your discontent at http://www.petitiononline.com/LOGNOW/petition.html
