No, it's not true! I was at school from 1949-56 in boys only schools. We were always required to wear costumes. The only naked swimming we ever did was by moonlight!

My father, on the other hand, who was at the same school some 50 years earlier, saw nothing wrong with swimming naked.

The further back in history you go, especially in Europe, school boys and college men usually swam in the buff. I remember that we did in college a couple of times, as I recall it was to make a point about speed, lack of drag (although one guy had so much drag that we all wondered why he didn't sink) in swimming. Not true that "all boys" or that any boys in certain states, counties, school districts, etc. swam nude. However, it is so normal a thing to do that I now wonder why it isn't more widespread. In H.S. grades 7 - 12 prior to 1970 we always took showers after every gym class - it was mandatory! The primary reason I know was the education system's belief that girls and boys are supposed to see each other naked so that the curiosity factor is moot. It should be that way today but I hear few districts require showers anymore. Strange.

actually most places not only required shorts(not swimming trunks) but T-shirts as well. weird eh!

Swimming was not a class thing but a trip to local beaches or pools, often in the community center if they had one or at a local resort. No cut offs, the loose threads clog filters and pumps, gym shorts instead.

edit: swimming pools were pretty rare back then

At Los Angeles High School in 1959 that was true.

It seems unlikely that it was universally required considering that swimming classes weren't required at all for most schools.

Why? Are you going to build a time machine so you can go back and perv at them?
