Buy the guy some headphones for the TV.... pair him up with another hard of hearing resident.. have his hearing aides refitted..they may not fit right especially if he's had them for awhile so they may hurt his ears. Have a doc check him to make sure he doesn't have an infection which could also make it painful to wear the aides.

Bottom line, losing ones hearing is a miserable thing to endure, I know as I'm only 31 and already wear hearing aides..I can imagine how bad off my hearing will be by the time I"m 81...so be easy on the guy. He can't help it and he's suffering miserably to not be able to understand his loved ones .

You can call your local audiology clinic and find out what it would take to get an infra red system for the television. My grandfather has one. Once its hooked up to the tv, he just puts a headset on and he can adjust the volume as loudly as he would like.

Closed captioning is less effective with the elderly because many of them have visual problems that affects their ability to see the words and they aren't able to process the words quick enough. Truly the best system is an infra red *even if* he wore his hearing aids.

his hearing aids are obviously not providing him with what he needs or he would wear them eagerly. No one likes to miss what people say. His hearing loss may be such that even with the hearing aids he may still not hear clearly....this may not be able to be fixed. Or...more likely, the hearing aids were never adjusted properly. Unfortunately with hearing aid fittings, someone needs to follow up on it all and the assumption cannot be made that just because someone has hearing aids ...they can hear with them.

The loud television can be helped by turning on the caption option at the bottom of the screen. The volume problem can be also helped by putting a speaker from the television near the resident. What kind of a facility are you in? I am a Nurse Consultant for most of the nursing homes in Illinois and Iowa and would be glad to help with the rest of your issues. How do I contact you?

This is a difficult case really as he cant be forced to wear an hearing aid as this will be breaching his human rights and he cant be treated like a child you just have to try to reasoning with him let him think you are not the enemy and some1 who is ordering him around as this will be denting his pride a man of this age will be very angry he cant hear well and he is a proud man who cant accept he needs an hearing aid you need to win his trust 1st then maybe he will start to co opperate with you. good luck

Denial, denial, denial. I have been in the hearing industry and most of the time I try to explain to the client that they are missing so much by not hearing everything...When someone offers this man a peach...he says I do not want to go to the beach...

Try having his medical doctor talk to him it could add years to his life. Quality years.

Hearing aids have to be re-set every so often. INSIST

Get him to buy radio headphones, about £20

Me?..I'd remove his television until he can spell consideration.

Just because he is elderly does not make him 'untouchable', he needs to learn to respect others' feelings too.
