Spirit holding on: How do you explain this?
My grandma died a couple of years ago. She had alzhiemers and then had a stroke. After the stroke doctors said she had only days left. At the time my sister and I were away at college so when we heard we said we'd wait until she was gone to go up there. Well, days turned to weeks and the doctors tried to aid in her passing on with a morphine drift and everything but to no avail. Finally, while at work my sister said "she's waiting for us". So, we drove out the next day. We went to visit her and she was in a coma state by then and at one point she seized and her eyes opened and she looked as if she was looking up to Heaven, telling God she's ready. My sister whispered in her ear before we left that it was okay for her to go now. Later, that night my grandma passed on. Do you really think her spirit was waiting for us before it could moved on? How do you explain this?
This question stems from another question I just asked about my dad dying, please check it out if you don't mind.
Ronin, that ain't even the question. Yes someone from another religion could say the same but I'm of Christian faith so that's what I felt at the time. Why you gotta made this an argument of religious beliefs. This question has more to do with spirituality then religion. I doesn't hurt to have some sensitivity and talking about my dead Grandma here.

Yes that is right.
Bhagavad Gita states that Sprit Soul is different from the body...
It’s not the Body that holds the Sprit Alive, Rather the Sprit Soul that holds the Body alive...
But the Mind is so accustomed to the Body that it suffers all the suffering of the body and thinks it is dying, when actually the Body is Dying... There are many such cases Specially In India where Yogis are able to hold the body alive, in such a way that has no medical explanation....
Bhagavad Gita States that Above Mind is the intelligence and above Intelligence is the Will or Ego. Above this Will is the Soul.
So if one has a very high will power or desire, then they can even do what is unthinkable in the medical Science... We see this in many cases where a person is physically handicap but since Soul is different from Body, it achieves unimaginable feat with the Body, just by will power..
In your case, it looks like Your Grandmother must have a very strong desire to meet you before she passed away.

Yes. The same thing happened, in the reverse form, to me when my Dad passed away. I was in the military at the time. He waited for me to get home and stayed alert the whole time I was there. At the exact time that my plane was taking off from the airport to go home he slipped into a coma and died soon after.

That is a good question. I don't know if you're religous, or what faith you belong to, I'm a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons). I don't know if your Grandmother was waiting for you to come to her side before she could go, but I do know that you will see your Grandmother again. And right now your Grandmother is in a state of rest and peace, I'm sure she had a joyful reunion with loved ones who had passed on before she did. But the main thing I wanted to say is death is not the end, you will see her again.

Yes, it is very common for people to wait for loved ones to be with them before they "leave". It is all about love, after all...

"As if she was looking up to heaven" Do you understand that someone from another culture would write this exact same story as "as if she were waiting for vishnu" or "as if she were ready for ahura mazda". Sorry, no dice.
