By cot do you mean crib? Around two or two and a half or three. I was in a crib till I was five but in the 50's they had cribs advertised to keep a kid in till five. I never felt caged in as I learned early to crawl out of it. I remember I got my first twin bed right before kindergarten. My daughter was three when we moved her. She had a problem as she felt secure in the crib. We left the crib up in her room without the side bars and the first two weeks she went back and fourth till she was ready for us to take down the crib and store it away. You are the only one that knows your child. If they are at the get into everything stage keep them in the crib a bit longer if you value your sleep.

When he feels ready to get out of a bed like a big boy, then give him a bed. Never buy the bed without trainning him with the bed and reward him when he gets the bed.

as soon as he is comfortable being able to climb on and off of a taller bed, you can make a big production of it when you buy a "big boy" bed....

my son got his bed when he turned 21/2

Good. Keep him in it. Til he's 18. He will hate you if you put him in a bed, trust me, we did that to my cousin and she wouldn't even sleep in it.
