Teachers carrying guns in school?

I know this question has been proposed before but I'm from Missouri and our governor has now suggested that teachers in Missouri might be permitted to carry guns. Rural Missouri is a strong gun-advocate area and it scares me to think we might start arming our teachers. I can't see how it can help but I think this is a real possiblity. I wonder if the media focus and attention on the details has contributed to the increase in these incidents. Not that it shouldn't be reported - it's the details that I think are more impacting on potential copy-cats.

Update:

Sorry this got posted twice - not sure how that happened. I'm not deleting either one bc people have already responded.

And all the 2nd Amendment people will love it, until a stronger 18 year old kid takes a gun away from a teacher and uses it to kill his fellow students.

I agree with the preservation of the 2nd amendment, but if I knew there was a gun in my kid's school, I'd move them to a new school pronto!

If there were guns there and I wasn't informed as a parent and my kid was injured or killed, I'd sue everyone including every single legislator that voted for such a bill (I know that would be limited, but I'm making a point) until they were destitute and living on skid row as punishment.

There are a lot of ways to make schools secure - arming teachers IS NOT one of them.

If you're worried that the average teacher is going to shoot Little Johnny for not doing his homework, I'd say your school district has bigger problems than the obvious. A gun is a simple tool, and it does nothing unless the person carrying it puts it to use. Saying it's a step back because of some potential harm would be more appropriate if used on something more dangerous, like a set of car keys. It's really a non-issue, except that on the rare occasion when you need a handgun, you need it very badly, and immediately. I just don't see any real downside to the allowance, though I doubt many teachers will actually carry a gun.

I am sorry but this will not work, only make it worse. If someone is determined to commit a crime they will find a way. I don't know the answer but throwing in more guns is not the solution. You need to remember some of the killings were done by the students already in the school. A lot of schools already have metal detectors have guards and I think some have police patroling the halls. Even in prison-a lock down system-murder happens. What is the answer?

I think the media does play a large part of it. We have hundreds of channels that need to talk about something 24/7. So the more they blow something out of proportion the better the ratings. I cannot see teachers carrying guns. I can see the note come home from the teacher. Little Jimmy didn't hand in his homework and then got lippy, I had to take him out. Sorry signed...miss gruber

because of the shootings going on at schools eve nby administration, we have k9 searches of the students as well as the teachers. they can get in just as much trouble as the students can for carrying a gun. the only gun at our school is carried by a school resource officer and he can even get in trouble for using it in the wrong way or threatening to use it when he shouldnt. also, everyone must wear an id at school if you dont you are otentially "armed and dangerous" we have had expelled students and their parents came into our school getting ready for revenge. it s pretty scary that people aren't trustworthy anymore.

Badddd idea. Very bad. I'm sorry, but the moment my daughter's teachers start carrying guns, I will start home-schooling her. How can children learn when they are afraid of their teachers??

  • I live in KCMO and I supported Blunt over McCaskill, but there are benefits and drawbacks to this.

    Benefits

Teacher can defend selves against shooters

    Deterrance effect

    Drawbacks

Easier for shooters to get guns? (steal it)

    Ethics

I dont know, personally I dont think its a good idea

I'd hate to see that. I don't see why we can't have an off duty (or on duty for that matter) police officer in a school. I see them in banks all over Ohio. I'm sure our kids are as important as cash.

I think this is rediculous I don't believe cops should be able to carry guns in school.
