"Knowledge comes, but wisdom lingers" A. Tennyson

I agree, you can be knowledgable and not wise. Wisdom is being able to apply your knowledge, your intuition, your past experiences or your spirituality to your life and decisions and advice to others etc. I would say wisdom comes from using your heart and not just your brain.

Wisdom also means knowing you don't know everything!

Wisdom is defined in the Serenity Prayer:

G-d, grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change,

The Courage to change the things I can,

And the Wisdom to know the difference.

Therefore I need to analyze whether problems can be changed by me or not. And that analysis and the outcome, will make me wise.

I use this yardstick often in my life & it helps.

Woah Nellie et al.!!! ..Knowledge and wisdom are two different things completely..I met a number of knowledgeble people who show no sign of wisdom. Knowledge is something you learn and wisdom is something you know and experience. Furthermore, some really knowledgeble people lack the wisdom to exercise situation-appropriate actions...be it dialogue or behaviour. A total and complete lack of social skills.

Understanding the limitation of knowledge and going beyond is wisdom. Knowledge a minute part of wisdom but we have to understand knowledge and break its boundary in order wisdom to manifest.

wisdom can be many different things to many different people, just as you say you know what wisdom is to you, i can say i know what wisdom is to me. i have found though, that there are certain characteristics of "wise people". the more knowlegde one gains in life, the sadder they usually become.the wiser one is, the quieter they usually are, saying things when they need saying. and sometimes the wise sit back and laugh to themselves while watching the foolish make the mistakes they made back when they themselves were foolish. being wise has a lot to do with having patience!

To me, wisdom is a result of looking beyond the surface appearance of things, and instead trying to see how they fit and interact with other things. It is also related to understanding, where again, we understand things according to their relation to the overall. (as in understanding something versus knowing the facts)

But wisdom seems to be a result of the accumulation of a lot of understanding.

Wisdom is the application of knowledge.

A lack of stupid mistakes may be an indication of wisdom.

I think wisdom is action-oriented; it is the ability to choose to (re)act to the world one perceives so that benefits are maximized and detriments are minimized.

What types of specific actions would be characterized as "wise" would depend on the value system or context of the wise person's world. In the current U.S., for example, most would say that it's "wise" to seek careers in fields that are lucrative and stable, to save money and invest, etc. Another wise man whose values orient more on family and relationships would privelege career choices that are conducive to good family relationships: good hours, low stress, etc.

One who is wise would be adept at perceiving what factors in a situation are important, which are less important, and be routinely successful at acting on those perceptions in ways that eventually lead to the intended results.
