why we insist on babies to cry immediately after their birth?

To make sure that they can breathe on their own properly. If they do not make any noise is can mean significant problems with the lungs or an obstructed airway. My oldest daughter did not start breathing on her own immediately and was wheeled out of my room so fast I did not even realize what was going on. Turned out to be minor and she was okay in a few minutes.

Baby or for that matter human can have sever malfunction of the brain if it does not get oxygen to the brain.

Maximum time is 5minutes. After that it is up to God.

When baby cry, the crying opens up it air passages, that may have em-bionic fluids.

Most doctors would turn the baby up side down and give a couple of wakes on the buttocks to make baby cry and help start the breathing if baby does not cry in few second after the birth. This is to make sure that passages open up and baby is not left to chock to death by the fluids that may be present.

Many babies won't take that first breath on their own. Having been removed from the umbilical cord and amniotic fluid, they would soon suffocate.

That first cry gets the lungs going... to anthropomorphize them... that first smack on the hiney makes the lungs realize, "Whoa! Hey! I'm not breathing liquid anymore! I need to take oxygen from the air now".

Some babies, though, need no help to get that first cry going, as the sheer shock of being born into cold air gets them yelling their heads off.

Babies do cry once they come out ,coz the change in the temperature, their comfort is changed, they have to gasp for breath, for the first time the air enters through their noseand mouth, their lungs automatically expands. the more they cry louder the more the lung expands, hence the respiration process gets activated -breathing in and breathing out process gets started.

Slapping the bottom is to make sure the newborn starts

breathing. Since it wasn't using it's lungs inside the womb.

Some babies have died in the past because they didn't start breathing properly.

It helps to clear the lungs of any fluid thats left in them after the birth.

Insures clear airway and also part of the birth rating given to assess the birth condtion of the child.

it used to be, to make sure they get a good breath and are breathing correctly. The doctors used to make sure they were cry by giving a small spank. But now-a-days, not only can that be construed illegal, but, the doctors have other ways to make sure the baby is breathing instead of making them cry.
