As a PT, I have to say that this is a dangerous question to answer. First, we don't know any details of the type of ailment you have and certainly there are certain diagnoses for which certain exercises may be detrimental. For instance, with an insufficient ACL, open chain knee extension can cause significant stress on the ligament. For patellofemoral problems, leg presses with the knee flexed more than 90 degrees causes alot of stress between the patella and the femur. etc.... Get in to see a PT right away who can perform a through evaluation, recommend the appropriate exercises and reassess your progress.

the best thing that you can do is have strong quads going into your surgery. do some partial wall sits...just bring your knees about half way down to a 90 degree bend...you don't need to go down to 90 and you don't want to go past at all! or if you're using a machine, just lift up about 45 degrees from the 90 degree position. also, do your hamstrings. For some simple stuff try standing on a pillow or some foam and balancing, but do it with a counter to hold on to your something in case you lose your balance... other than that, you will get some with therapy.

I think the best way would be to ask the doctor. But I do know that a good, safe exercise would be to run in the swimming pool. Just a little bit of resistance can help you plus you are simulating running, so it isn't an unnatural movement that could possibly hurt you more

I'd ask a Physical therapist or your Doc.
