What is it about hearing a certain song than can transport us back to another place in time?
Songs are like time machines to me.... I can hear a song that was playing somewhere, sometime in the past, and can almost relive that moment....

It is a phenomenon known as sense memory. Something we have experienced through one of our senses, such as hearing triggers a memory more strongly than simply remembering it does. We smell vanilla and were back in childhood baking cookies with our Mom would be an example.

It's the same for me. Like the song that was playing when I first kissed my boyfriend. Also some smells take me back to my childhood. Certain flowers. It's conditioning. You associate certain songs with good or bad memories.

This happens to me too! Sometimes I hear a really good song but I can't listen to it because it brings me back to a bad memory.

I guess because you have certain memories attached to them.Like the song I remember best from one of my dates with my ex girlfriend is "Like A Stone" by Audioslave yet I can't remember one other song that was on my cars radio that night.

I know what you mean, and it's one of life's most beautiful pleasures. Even if it's a bad memory, you experience that, and you live it down that way. If it's a wonderful memory, you get to relive it.
