Teaching ESL in Germany?
I'm thinking about visiting my son in Germany, perhaps for 6 - 8 weeks. Is it reasonable to think I might pick up a little spending money by teaching English lessons to individuals? What might be a fair price to charge for a 1-hour lesson?

For the younger generation, probably not. They are taught English in school. As for the older Germans, most know at least some English and the others really don't care enough to learn. You might be lucky enough to find a person or two but more than likely not. I would save up enough money before you go and then you can have that 6-8 weeks with your son instead of having to meet other people's schedule for you to teach them English. I hope you have fun in Germany. It is such a wonderful place.

You don't need a permission to give English tutorials!!! You can hang up small posters with your phone number at schools that you give tutorials in English, a fair price could be between 10 and 15 Euros. If you are bilingual, this could be very popular at High Schools.
If you are not, you could hang posters at universities, that you will give more elaborate tutorials, on essays, help with literature and such. In that case you can charge at least 15 Euros, maybe more. You also should think about whether you will go to these people's homes to teach or whether they should come to you, or if you leave it up to them.

Well, first you need an working permission. Many people want to improve their English skills, especially speaking and understanding. If you are in Germany, you should write something like "Teach and improve English for XXX € / hour. Call [your number here] if interested" on blackboards in schools and universities and you will find some people.

To be honest, it'll be more a hindrance for you. Besides having to get a work permit, finding customers will be pretty difficult. Most Germans I know, prefer to learn with prepackaged language programs available almost everywhere here.
