Why would people ask others not to exercise their right to vote?

I have seen questions here on YahooAnswers telling/asking people who think a certain way not to vote on election day. This seems really prejudiced to me - like some people think that only those who agree with them should be able to participate in our government, when in reality that goes directly against the principles our country was founded on. Can anyone explain this attitude to me? Polite and serious answers only, please.

If you are a US Citizen over the age of 18, you should absolutely be voting every single time. If you are here illegally, you don't have any right/business/reason to participate. If you honestly want to participate, you know what you have to do first. Go back and follow the legal immigration process. Last year, over 700,000 people immigrated legally.

This type of discouragement is wrong, but is likely a result towards people who have the attitude: "They're exercising their right, Not to Vote". This ridiculous attitude is the most destructive to Our entire Voting process and Our Freedoms. Voting is Speaking. Not voting because you don't like either candidate is the lazy fool's excuse to play victim. There are so many other, usually more important State/Local issues being voted on. If you will only go vote for the candidate and ignore the issues, you aren't doing your job. Citizens will complain all year about how bad the Government is handling this and that, then find some excuse not to Go Vote. Voting is the easiest part of being involved and the most important.

Elections in Iraq received almost no attention in the US, but millions of Iraqi citizens proved that They want to Vote. After 30 years, Iraqi citizens finally had the opportunity to Vote in a free election and no excuse, not even the death threats, would prevent them from voting. Never-mind our Government, How bad do we look when only 50% of the registered voters actually go Vote? Our lives aren't even being threatened, GO VOTE, so that doesn't change.

If you don't Exercise your Right to Vote, you aren't exercising your Freedom of Speech.

One excuse is all you need to GO VOTE, Tuesday November 7th.

This country was founded by several people with several ideas. When 1 party comes to power and governs over the 3 Branches of our Government then bad things start to happen.... The Govt is no longer of the people, for the people, or by the people. It is simply powered by a slim majority of the population.

In today's arena a Wealthy, White, Male, Baptist, Business Owner is doing quite well for himself.... However, A working class, Hindu, Immigrant from India has hardly any representation in Government.

Since the Republicans have controlled all 3 branches of Government the separation of Church and state has ceased to exist and our freedoms are depleting....

I am not saying that Democrats are better than Republicans. However, America needs a change...

Because by having people who dissagree with them not vote, they have a better chance of getting their way. And yes, our country was founded on everyone being able to vote, however, what the people want has long since been abandon with the rise of the rich and the fall of the middle class.

There are some who think not voting will affect the outcome of total votes, there are some who think not voting will defeat the outcome of a vote (ie insufficient voters), there are some who think not voting will help 'their side' - none of these are actually true nor achieve the results those advocating non-voting hope to achieve - I personally think everyone should vote, whether you are for or against something..... how can we have a democracy if our democratic rights, such as voting, are denied or infringed or discouraged?

Simply put, there are sections of our society who care more about their issues than thy do this nation. Number 2 national syndicated radio talk show host Sean Hannity said basically the same thing, that Democrats shouldn't vote. People like him are much more concerned about there own issues, nation be damned. Is it really a stretch to say that those who say such things are that far away from actually doing things to stop people from voting, or making it harder for there vote to count? We have seen voter rolls purged of names that are similar to names of felons in states like Florida and Ohio. And we can all remember Jim Crow laws in the south that stopped people from voting all together. This is a dangerous slope and ideologues are pushing us down it.

you're perfect. Us "Democracy loving idiots with our panties in a bunch" can in all risk all vote immediately that we are happy you think of balloting is a waste of time. My vote does count selection. Jesse Jackson pronounced right here in the 2004 election: "One vote desperate that u . s . of america might talk English quite than German in 1776. One vote saved Aaron Burr, later charged with treason, from turning out to be our president. One vote made Texas area of america in 1845. One vote replaced France from a monarchy to a republic. One vote has the capability to alter our direction." of direction, all of those fact, like each little thing else Jackson says, is thoroughly fake. yet while your vote would not count selection, then what does? you won't be represented as nicely as you need, yet be a factor of the approach. Or do no longer. that's what's large approximately Democracy. yet once you do no longer vote, do no longer whine with reference to the consequence the two. That distinction between 50% and seventy 5% of the inhabitants could desire to be unanimous, and that could heavily adjust the direction of the election. 3% might have given us Kerry as a President. That on my own shows the cost of balloting. i'm happy that 3% of Democrats stayed abode, tho, in the event that they did no longer, Kerry and Edwards may be feeling one yet another up in the Oval workplace. think of if we in simple terms disbanded Congress and enable California and manhattan make the thoughts based on your "share accuracy" formulation? it may be a disaster for something of the rustic by way of fact no longer each physique became represented, basically the states with large cities. Likewise for the individuals, guy. it quite is the version, pal. i'm hoping you may think again your opinion on the project, yet freedom lets you disagree and act or no longer act as a consequence. i'm happy for that, too.

Those people are just slamming others who do not agree with their views. Of course both Parties want to win, so they suggest that the other party shoudl not vote.

Wow- everything I wanted to say was just said by "Askthetoughquestions" above! Well said!!! I could not agree more.

All legal citizens should VOTE!!! No excuses! If you don't use your voice, how can anyone hear you?

i don't get that, personally i would never tell someone not to vote, for years i have gotten friends and family to start voting .

Also I never tell anyone who to vote for. republican or democrat. just that they need to vote, you dont have to vote like i do to have the right. most of my friends dont know how i vote, they know where i stand on things, dont tell them how i vote.

Everyone needs to vote, it is so easy

I do not vote, only because I do not like anyone runing. Give me a good man or woman and I will vote

Source(s): give me a candidate who spends more time talking about how they will help us, instead of bashign the ones running against them and I will vote.
