Should I go to the hospital if?

I go into anaphylactic shock, and use my EpiPen and then feel fine?

I recently had a serious allergic reaction that I just waited out, without going to the hospital like I should have. I hate having to go to the hospital and get all that medication shot into my system. The last time I had anaphylaxis and went to the hospital I felt like I was about to die, it was the worst feeling ever.

I just want to know if I use my EpiPen, even though it says to go to a doctor within a 1/2 hour - but if I feel fine, should I still go?

Thanks! :)

btw - if it helps, I am allergic to tree nuts and peanuts, cats, mosquito bites, dust and mold. (yeah, I should just kill myself. lol)

Yes! The Epi Pen is only intended as a quick treatment. But you really do need to either get to your doctors office or the Emergency room and get checked out. You could still have a reaction. And you need your vitals taken. I am a Registered Nurse. And highly allergic to bee's, I have used my Epi Pen twice. Made my heart rate go up to 180 and higher. That is one of the reasons they tell you to go to the doctor after using it.

You can get more information at either of these 2 sites.

Good question. Although epi is one of the treatments for anaphylaxis sometimes it just doesn't do the job. Anaphylaxis is a cascade meaning like dominoes one step trigerrs the next. Usually as the steps progress the cascade grows and grows. Meaning the longer the reaction goes on [in minutes] the larger the reaction becomes. Using an epi pen can stop it dead in its tracks if used early enough, but thats not really what its designed for. The epi pen is really just supposed to by you time until you can make it to medical assistance. Many people will die from anaphylaxis before the paramedics could even get ther without an epi pen.

Sometimes the epi is given too late and its just not enough of a dose or other medications may also be required. I would always still check in with your doc at a minimum. Or you could always start off for the emergency room and if you're still feeling fine while waiting to get seen you could leave.

Yes...go to the doctor within a 1/2 an hour just like the directions on the pen. They're there for a good reason. There could be times when the pen only lasts a short time, to lull you into thinking you're fine, and then the anaphylactic shock can hit you again, but worse. Trust what the doctor (and the medication) says, they've been at it a lot longer than you have.

  • I had to carry an epi-pen once for allergic purposes, and they said that i must go to the hospital if i ever used it. They even said i should call 911 before i used it to get an ambulance on the way. They said the epipen could have very serious side effects. Oh, and i know how you feel with the mold, i'm highly allergic as well, it's probably about the worst allergy there is.

hi! properly i'm 40-one weeks pregnant and function been at Blanchfield health facility in fort campbell, ok.Y. (military) and that i have had no longer something yet undesirable reports so a concepts. i have not seen a authentic healthcare professional yet and this is been a diverse mid spouse each and every time. Your dealt with like a mode particularly then someone. at the same time as i tried discussing my start plan with the perfect mid spouse she suggested there replaced into no element in me chatting with her about it reason she does no longer be there for my delivery besides. I sit down in the waiting room for a minimum of 30 min after my appointment time each and every time and each and all and sundry who works there is in basic terms rude. If i might want to work out a civilian healthcare professional i might want to yet given my coverage i'm no longer allowed. i'm no longer attempting to scare you yet all my journey were adverse. I somewhat have alot of acquaintances who've had those variety of subject matters with this actual health facility so i visit't say this is all military yet i might want to follow civilian care. besides i desire this helps a touch particularly then sounding like a venting consultation. solid success with each and every thing!!

i would try to get into the drs. as soon as possible, within 24hrs, and if thats not a possiblity, i would go to a urgent care facility, just to make sure your 100%. a ER trip is very expensive, and if your epipen worked, you might just want to get 'overviewed' and get a new pen for next time.

yes you should go to the hospital even if you are feeling well after the epi-pen.....the epi-pen is only meant to stop it long enough to get to the hospital....you need to be examined by a physician to make sure the allergic reaction is under control...

You may want to call the Nurseline or whatever nurse advice line your insurance has or go to urgent care just to be on the safe side.

You should definitely go, you don't know if you still have something in your system, and if your meds wear off, you could go into shock again. It may be uncomfortable, but it's absolutely necessary.

Sounds like you are just risking your life to not go. If that's not important to you, don't go! I can understand your concern, but you should really discuss this with your doctor.
