Do you think it's right for corporations to profit from prison labor?

I definitely have an issue with private interests profiting from prison labour. And my reason for that is that it is a conflict of interest. I explain... Private companies might start out gaining profit from that labour with the best interest in the world, but history has shown us that human nature tends to be greedy. Therefore, once there is a potential to make more profits, they are no gonna put a voluntary cap to the amount of cash they can get out of it, whether it is for ethical or humane reasons. Hence, they will lobby gvnts to build more prisons and put more people to jail in order to increase their manpower.

Contrary to the belief of the brutal conservatives out there, I think do not think the reason that push people in jails are cut and dry. Believe it or not, justice is not yet an exact science in our western society. By that I mean that

- people are still wrongfully convicted

- people that enforce the law or carry out justice are still consciously or otherwise biased against people from different races, different backgroud, different lifestyles, different social upbringing, etc.

Therefore, wisdom commands to be more cautious and compassionate when talking about "those people in prisons"

To wrap up, I am for gvnts trying to recup some of the money they spend running the jails but against private businesses profiting from other people's misery.

Does anyone know how much it costs any society to police, try and convict someone?

Wether it's a private corporation or the government making a profit as long as the convicts are productive then we can still find some value in their lives.

I think it is okay for governmental agencies to profit from prison labor to recoup some of the costs of their confinement, but I do not support the idea of private businesses profiting.

So you think that the really innocent people -- the taxpayers -- should pay extra taxes so that rapists and burglars will not have to work in jail?

So far less then 10% of crimes get solved. The only people who will get "rail-road-ed" to jail because of higher quotas are criminals who have so far gotten off scot free.

Why should not criminals WORK OFF their debt to society instead of living in jail at taxpayers expense?

Hey hq3, their not working off their debt to society if big business is benefiting. The benefits need to go to society as a whole.
