Yellow spots forming on clothes after storage in closet?

Yellow spots form on my mothers clothes after hanging in her closet for a while. Clothes are clean and show no signs of any spots when put away in closet. Spots form on clothes that are hanging on racks and folded on shelves. Some are stored with plastic bags covering them and some are just in the open air. We have had others tell us they have had the same problem but do not know the cause. Can anyone explain this?????

storing in plastic makes the yellowing worse. It's best to store clothes where the air can circulate.

I agree with the other answerers that these are stains that were not completely cleaned or laundered out before the clothes were put into storage. I got yellow spots my Irish linen wedding gown, and I'm sure they were from the champagne! (dress was dry cleaned right after the wedding 26 years ago.)

My friends and I have all had this problem. There were no yellow stains on the clothing when it was last put away or hung in the closet. It does usually wash out but now one knows where they come from. It was not from previous spots or spills. I had a white jacket hanging in my closet that had no yellow spots when I put it there. Six months later there were the spots. No one seems to have an answer for this mystery.

I noticed the same things on the baby clothing I had put away for several years. In my case, baby formula or spitup had appeared to wash out. When I packed the clothing, it looked nice and clean. As the years went by, the formula turned yellow but the clothing stayed white.

So, it is probably a matter of a stain not showing up until later on.

Since I know mine are formula-related, I will add dishwasher detergent to the laundry when I wash it. It is supposed to get out food-related stains from baby clothes.

Some stains, not thoroughly cleaned or treated, may develop into those yellow spots while they could also be effects of closet moisture. Always use Tide To Go sample on fresh food or drink stains, so you'll never have to worry about them later. Also, visit this site http://www.upkb.com/tidetogo.php for the product info.

How do you feel about stairwells? I sit right next to one and I know how to lock people out. We'll give those storage closet people a run for their money!

usually is you wash the item the yellow will come right out. I am not exactly sure what it is but it happens to me all the time & have yet to have an item of clothing ruined from it.

It could have been persperation that was undetectable at the time of storage. Go to a cleaner and ask if they can get rid of it if the clothes are worthwhile.
