How many bananas?

There was a shipwreck at sea and Buck, Lance and Jack were washed

ashore on a small island. Reaching the shore, exhausted, they all

fell asleep.

Buck woke first and saw that a box of bananas had been washed

ashore. He ate one third of the bananas and went back to sleep.

Next, Lance woke up, and seeing the box of bananas, ate one third

of what was left and went back to sleep.

Jack woke up next and assumed that the other two hadn't eaten any

bananas, so he ate one third of what remained.

When Jack had finished, there were eight bananas left over. How

many bananas were in the box originally?

    Work backwards to find out:

If Jack ate 1/3, and there were 8 left, that means 8 = 2/3*x so x = 8*3/2 = 12 bananas before Jack got to them.

So Lance at 1/3 and left 12, so before Lance got to them there were 12*3/2 = 18 bananas.

Finally (or firstly in this case!) Buck ate 1/3 and left 18, so before Buck got to them there were 18*3/2 = 27 bananas.

So there were 27 bananas to start with.
