Change the format of the cell to Text.
Right click on the cell or range of cells. Go to Format Cells. Change the category of the cell(s) to Text or Special / Zip Code.

Follow these steps and it should work:
Right click on the top of the column
Click Format Cells
In the number tab click on the Category: Special
Choose the format you are looking for: Zip, Zip +4 or Social Security Number
Press Okay.
That should work. If not let me know.
