I switch my mouse buttons in Windows XP, but they don't switch for some games - how can I make it 'stick'?

I switch the left/right mouse buttons in the XP control panel, but the setting doesn't always "carry over".

Myst IV, Doom 3 for sure have this problem. With Doom3 I have to do the menus "reversed" (for me), but I can configure the game controls. For Myst IV, I have to use the "wrong" button configuration for game play.

Is there a general fix (which would be nice)? If not, how about a specific fix for Myst IV then?

Update:

Actually, quite a few games recognize the reversed setting (Warcraft 3 and Oblivion for sure).

No matter how you set your mouse, the game will default to its particular mouse settings. At best, you might reconfigure the game controls in the game.
