DUI a money maker for the state and goverment. And thats a fact?

Oh the big bad govt kept you from killing someone with your alcohol fueled death vehicle and having to serve a whole 90 days in jail and becoming someones wife? So sorry you're being so mistreated. Jacka$$!!

All those replies and not one person had anything to say except that driving drunk is bad. I'm really disappointed with the average IQ of the people answering these questions with their knee-jerk reactions and sarcastic remarks.

DUI is certainly a money maker for the state. I'm a DUI defense attorney, but take a few minutes to think about this topic before going crazy and goose-stepping with MADD and the neo-prohibitionists, children.

First, the state makes money off of taxes levied against alcoholic beverage sales. In addition to the sales tax and (commonly) a liquor tax, there is also the liquor license that costs bundles.

Second, the state makes money off of the criminal charges. This is the given, of course, that everyone assumes is simply a court fine and court costs, but it can also include "cost recovery" for the police and prosecuting attorney. That's right... you get to pay for people to accuse and convict you, even though it's your tax dollars at work. (Nevermind the conflict of interest here for presenting truthful testimony or the age-old rule that prosecutors don't get to bill the accused for their attorney fees. Those days are long gone.)

Third, the state often time imposes a driver responsibility fee over and above the criminal charges.

Fourth, and most incriminating, the state typically runs government sponsored lotteries out of bars, i.e. Keno.

If we really wanted to stop drinking and driving, we could certainly pass a law... just like we could ban the sale of cigarettes. But if the government makes more money in taxes selling cigarettes, and more money by promoting drinking and driving, where do you think the state is going to cast its dice?

The bottom-line is that you (and I mean "you" as in all you people who answered this question with your knees jerked through the ceiling) better hope that the state doesn't accuse of a DUI just because you drive a nice car and have a juicy fat check book, even when you haven't had a single drop to drink.

Sure is! How dare the state and government charge a fine for a drunk idiot getting behind the wheel of a vehicle, taking their life and the lives of others into their hands? I've never known anyone murdered in a more senseless way. Grow up and sober up before you drive and you will never make the state or gov't any money!

If 2 or 3 drinks puts you over your states legal limit, then you are a criminal. If you don't like the law, work to change it. Lotsa luck.

Well take a taxi next time or pay a friend to give you a lift,

that way you can stop the money making government machine.

And in doing so, perhaps you won't kill an innocent life the next time you choose to be so irresponsible.

A fine may help a drunk driver keep off the road and possibly save a person from killing or injuring their self and others.

Ohhh, I feel so sorry for those poor people who decided to get in their car a drive while intoxicated. And to think... the money they have to pay for their consequences can be used towards the community... that is just awful.
