My 3 year old has been running fever for 5 days. What could be the problem?

At first, I thought she may be cutting a tooth. But 5 days seems like a long time! She's also been saying her tummy hurts, but isn't throwing up or having any other problems. I can't get her in to see a doctor until tomorrow. Tylenol and Advil have kept the fever broken, but it always comes back. I'm getting worried!

Update:

If fever means infection, then why do they run fever when cutting teeth? Is some sort of infection involved?

Update 2:

Thanks guys! The doctor saw her anyway and it turned out to be a double ear infection! Ouch! The doc's office was swamped with sick kids ... mostly strep throat going around, so because her throat was fine, they had to put her off. BUT they worked her in when I called them back. We live in the middle of nowhere, and there's only one doc for miles!

Thanks for all the great advice. She's getting better as we speak!

First of all if your child has been running a fever for 5 days and you dr tells you he can't see her till tomarrow I'd find a new dr. Your right 5 days is a long time to run a fever especially with no other symptoms. Now if there is no other symptoms and your child is eating ok, sleeping ok, and acting appropriately tomarrows dr appt is ok. But if you child is really lethargic (just laying there not eating or drinking, not urinating as usual, has wet her pants when she normally does'nt or is complaing it hurts when she urinates she needs to see a dr today, if she is complaing her ear hurts, or that it hurts when she eats(inside her mouth) or has a fine sandpapery rash on her chest or groin area then she needs to see a dr. today.

Fever not only means infection but also can mean inflammation, thus the reason for them running a fever when cutting teeth. The gums become mildly inflammed. If it's not very high, and the only other symptom is a tummy ache, then it could still be teething. Also, if it isn't too high (like 99 or so) then I wouldn't give her too much meds for it. A low grade fever is the body's way of naturally fighting an infection (if she has one). It helps boost the immune response. Hope that she is feeling better soon!!

Maybe consider taking her to the emergency room. A fever can mean a lot of things usually an infection of some sort. Depending on how high it is is how much you worry. If it is low not more than 99 - 100 wait to go to the doctor tomorrow. If it is over 101 - 104 go to the ER, prolonged fever of those temps can have effects on your babies brain. They are to small to deal with such high temps for so long. I really hope she is okay.

With cutting teeth it is such a process to break the skin I think a fever is just a side effect. There should be no infection with cutting teeth unless she has thrush.

You need to get up and take your girl to the ER screw the doctor there is no way in hell that i would let a fever go that long the minute my children's fever last longer then 6 hrs and the medicine isn't making it any better I would have been on the phone with the pediatrician finding out whats going on. And then on my way to the ER. You could be doing more damage then intended. Your child needs treatment ASAP.

You need to see a doctor. Five days with a fever is not something you are able to cure. There must be an infection.

Take her to the ER if you can't get in until tomorrow. If you have a sick child you should be able to get a same-day appointment. After your girl is feeling better I suggest you find a new Dr.! Good luck and I hope she is better soon!!

thats wayyyy too hot. off to the ER! She'll likely need antibiotics. Try and grab a colouring book from home or something for her to do so she doesnt have to use the toys in the ER.

Crissy's answer makes good sense to me. I have a 2-yr. old (only one) and I often ask my friends who've got several kids these questions because I tend to freak out too quickly. Guess it's a first-time mom thing.
