For a resume/cv, how far back should I go regarding former employment?

I'm updating my resume/cv for my job/internship search. Should I include all of my employment history, going back to high school in 1996? Or should I only go back a certain number of years?

Update:

I probably should have mentioned my field. I'm a bio major and will be graduating in May with my MS in forensic science. Due to college and moving, I only have 1 job that is over a year. And pretty much only one job that is in anyway related to jobs I'd be looking for.

If you are currently in college, only go back to the jobs you've held while in college. Make sure you highlight the duties in those jobs that are most relevant to the position you are seeking. Also, try to keep your resume at one page in length, and make sure you use no less than 10 point font. Employers like a resume that is easy to scan. Good luck.

Putting your job history on resumes shows potential employers your stability for holding jobs. If you've had numerous jobs recently it will show you're a job hopper - something employers want to stay away from. If you've only had a few jobs in those years and have worked consistently then by all means list them as it will show employers your staying power.

Resumes should be kept to 1 page if possible listing only your most important attributes.

My rule of thumb is to only list jobs you have had 1 year plus. It looks better and it has always worked for me so list all the ones you have kept for a while.

You'll need to highlight job experience. It's a good choice when applying for work with traditional organisations or when you held a post that had an impressive title.

I always go as far back as the site will let me. typically though, when filling out an application, it will go back about 4 job references.
