Is it too late to have my cat spade? She is just turned 6.?

It is not too late. I had my female "fixed" when she was about 7. It did her a world of good. She was never allowed outside, but the repeated heats were turning the house upside down. After the operation, she went through a couple "false heats," but that stopped very shortly. She calmed down quite a bit. And just as expected, she's put on some weight.

I have a cat that had never been spayed for 10 1/2 years. She also never had kittens. I assumed she was sterile. I even seen boys trying their best to get her pregnant. Nothing ever happened. After 10 years she became pregnant.

She gave birth to a stillborn kitten. She never had any more. After a few days, I knew something was wrong. She still felt pregnant. I took her to the vet. They did an immediate spay and found dead kittens inside her. They said if I hadn't brought her in, she probably would've died within 24 hours.

They were kind of mystified that she had never been pregnant before. I'm just glad she's fine now. She turned 11 years old in Sept. and is doing fine. They can get pregnant in later years obviously.

If she just turned 6, I don't think it's a big deal. They said at 10 1/2 it was dangerous, but necessary. She loves all my other cats babies and acts like a mother. Although she's never been a mother herself, she's the best mother any kitten could ask for. I'm so glad I got her to the vet on time and that she's alive today. Don't hesitate to get your baby spayed at 6 years old.

Although you have lost some of the health benefits of having it done much younger, there is still plenty of time to prevent some very serious (sometimes fatal) medical conditions that WILL develop at some point later on if you don't get her spayed.

Also, female cats do not go through menopause like women (or would they call it tomcatopause? LOL)....they can get pregnant WELL into their senior years. That's a huge, detrimental strain on their bodies. (Imagine an elderly woman going through a pregnancy and giving birth.)

Please get her a good checkup ASAP. At her age, she should really have the preanesthetic bloodwork to check out how things are working inside her body, to increase safety of anesthesia. There's about a 90% chance she has significant dental disease, too. While she's under for the spay would be a perfect time to get that taken care of by getting her teeth cleaned, before it spreads to her internal organs. That will not only save her from having to undergo anethesia 2 separate times, it will save you money by doing it that way. But most importantly....it's best for her.

Adult female animals that have never been spayed or neutered can develop serious health issues. Most commonly in females is pyometra, which is a pus-filled uterus that can be fatal and is much more costly than a routine spay.

Be forewarned, however, that because she is 6 years old, your veterinarian will most likely want to run extensive blood work prior to her undergoing anesthesia. This is to make sure her kidney and liver values are ideal for going under anesthesia.

Also, most clinics have an added fee for mature spays because the procedure is more invasive for a dog this age.

But again, this will be well worth it for your dogs health in the long run.

No, you can still get her spayed, but the vet may require you to get some extra blood tests and what not done before hand.
