With a TV, you have to remember that the resolution of a TV screen is often far less than that of a computer monitor. For example, the only way things look "right" when I connect my laptop to my TV is if I make the TV signal 1024x768 - even though my laptop is 1280x800. Bigger isn't always better for that sort of thing.

Also, the black and white display thing may be the video card, may be the S-Video converter (a semi-common problem with crappy low-end gear) or it may be the S-Video cable (again, crappy cheap stuff). I'd suggest going from least expensive to most expensive - try another S-Video cable (which you did), then try another TV set (borrow a friend's or something), then try a new video card.

One strange thing about your setup, though... why are you going S-Video --> Coax --> TV? Does your TV not have an S-Video input?

The normal cable input to your television set is analog, where as the S-Video is digital input/output. The only thing you need inbetween is a digital to analog convertor. The normal ones you get in the market does not guarantee high performance. The loss of data in these equipments is too much. So try getting a better convertor. Again try tuning in your convertor by making the TV tuning constant.

when i first got my pc it had a 64mb graphics card with tv out which i connected to tv and it was great (displaying videos, dvds, pictures etc) but when i got my new card with tv out(same make just higher spec) it would only display b+w using same lead. has the s video lead got 4 pins(two down each side) or has it got the full range(about seven pins i think) i don't know enough about s video to give a technical answer, just thought i would offer a possible reason why!

Your graphic card is build-in or what?? what chipset is that, is nvidia or ati if you got card ?? if your computer screen is black and white, this cause by some driver incompatible or your screen resolution neither too big or small. Other thing is your color quality must set it to 32 bit.

    hope it help :)

in case you have no longer have been given HDMI or element (purple/green/blue) inputs on your television, you will no longer have the potential to get the HD sign from the blu ray, so which you probably won't have the potential to observe it for 1080p or perchance 720p. making use of analog cables won't grant you a blu ray image, it is going to basically be like a great-unfold dvd.
