What effect does RH Negative have....?

When I was much younger I had an abortion, and found out I was RH Negative. Will this effect my chances of becoming pregnant. My husband and I have been trying, but no luck. I don't know if this has anything to do with it. I will talk to my doctor, but I am trying to do a little research first. Thanks in Advance!

Blood type or RH factor have nothing to do with the ability to get pregnant.

Go to a doctor/midwife and they can run a test to see if were sensitized (which can only happen if the baby was pregnant, which can only happen if the dady was rh+ and the babies blood mixed with yours and you didn't receive the rh antibody vaccine when you had the abortion -- which you probably would have had) However it is best to run the test.

It doesn't usually effect conception but it can cause complications during pregnancy. However, I wouldn't worry about it until you know whether you have to or not. Also find out whether your husband is - or +. If he is - you don't have to worry even if you are sensitized.

I am as well Rh neg and I was given a shot in the beginning of pregnancy and pill later on in the pregnancy to avoid infection of the blood. If the blood mixes then there can be serious complication. Make sure you talk to your Ob about this and get the meds. They were nasty horse pills for me...Good luck!

Your blood type has no bearing on the chances of becoming pregnant. The only problem you might have is if the baby ends up having a positive RH factor (opposite from yours). In such a case you'll be given medication to ensure that the baby will be healthy.

I believe it does have implications with trying to get pregnant. (i have some medical training)

    Anyway. Long story short...

RH negative means that it is difficult to conceive simply because when fertilized, your body sees this little egg as a foreigner. It attacks it, and it usually ends up in miscarriage. HERE"S THE BEST PART THOUGH....

If you see your practitioner and talk to them about it, there is a med that they can prescribe for you so that your body DOES NOT see it as foreign, and can have a safe and healthy pregnancy... Refer to the following...:

"Rhesus (Rh) factor refers to a specific antigen in the blood. Problems can occur when an Rh negative woman is pregnant with an Rh positive baby — which can occur if the father of the child is Rh positive."

"Your immune system normally protects against potentially harmful substances (antigens) by making antibodies to help destroy them"

substances (antigens) by making antibodies to help destroy them. An Rh negative woman pregnant with an Rh positive fetus may make antibodies to the Rh positive fetal cells. In a subsequent pregnancy, these antibodies may destroy the fetal red blood cells, leading to serious problems in the fetus.

"To reduce this risk, an Rh negative pregnant woman receives injections of Rho (D) immune globulin (RhoGAM). This injection blocks the recognition of Rh positive cells by the mother's body at the times a pregnant woman is most likely to be exposed to cells from her Rh positive baby — at about 28 weeks in the pregnancy and immediately after delivery. With these injections, Rh negative women can have safe Rh positive pregnancies."

    GOOD LUCK!!!

"If the woman has Rh-negative blood, it is tested for antibodies to the Rh factor (see Pregnancy at High-Risk: Rh Incompatibility). Having Rh antibodies can cause severe problems (even death) for a fetus who has Rh-positive blood. If antibodies in a pregnant woman's blood are detected early, the doctor can take measures to protect the fetus."

You will have to have the riogram(sp?) shot, you body will think your fetus is an infection or forgein item and try to fight it off.
