Anyone else a first time home buyer?

If so, how was your experience and what age were/are you? My husband and I just put an offer on a house last night, I am 19 and he is 21.

I won't rehash the advice given by the first two answerers as it is spot on.

Just make sure you two plan on being in the same area for a good amount of time. How long have you been married? Of course the only concern is you are both so young, and if your plans change or one of you decides to go to college, it could create a mess for you.

But as long as everything remains stable, owning property is always a good thing. I just bought my first house with my girlfriend and I was 26. Just turned 27. We had a great experience. We bought a house that needed a little work. Got a great deal and with a little cash and sweat equity it is in great shape now.

    Good luck!

    Congratulations!

    And good luck!

We just bought our first house 3 years ago after years of being apartment dwellers.

    3 pieces of advice....

    1) Get pre-qualified for a mortgage.

That will tell you what price range you can afford.

    2) Don't buy too much house!

What if you or your husband were to stop working for whatever reason? How would you pay for the house? And a more expensive house will mean more expensive utilities and maintenance.

    3) Use a Real Estate agent!

    It's worth the 3% commission!

I was 23 when I bought my first house, I wanted to wait until after college but you'll be fine at your ages, you just have to make a commitment to make those mortgage payments at all costs! No extra entertainment if that's what's necessary. You'll soon be in a position where your income increases, and you'll be even better off than now. Keep your credit intact, it will help you more than you possibly know right now.
