How does the US minimalise the damage of a lost war?

There are those who still believed the US "achieved all its aims" in Vietnam. Clearly "regime change" has occurred in Iraq but the war has been lost and the US will leave defeated. How can this defeat be best (re)presented?

I wasn't aware we lost. When did we leave Iraq, did I miss something? After a quick check, we haven't yet left Iraq and I don't believe we will until the Iraqis can manage their own security which is estimated to happen in about a year and a half. I am so sick of you America is the heart of all that is evil liberals.

The same way they did it in Viet Nam. Declare victory and get out.
