Did you plug into the CPU monitor port properly? Is it loose? If this still does not solve, it means that your CPU port have problems. Preferably the CPU monitor card inside. Send for repairs then.

Did you just play a new, (or an OLD), game for the first time? Games will sometimes reset your video mode to fewer colors. To fix this, Right click on your computer screen, choose Properties, then click the "Settings" tab. On the Left there will be a slider. If it is set to the farthest left, try moving it to the right one notch. Then note the numbers below the slider and click "apply". Widows will ask you if you're sure. Say Yes. You will then be given the option to keep the settings. If your desktop looks "right" to you say Yes. If not, say " NO"and try the next setting on the slider. Again write down the numbers. When you find and save the correct settings, you will have the last numbers you wrote down and will know your usual video resolution settings so you can change them back whenever a game does this to you.
If you get to the Display Properties->Settings window and the slider or something is greyed out, something else has gone wrong with your computer and you may have booted into "Safe Mode". Safe Mode is automatically sets the video resolution to 16 bit mode and 256 colors, and will look quite bright and glaring. Your computer may have booted into Safe Mode on it's own so whatever is broken will run with the minimum requirements. If you see the words "Safe Mode" in any of the corners you should call for technical support immediately.
* P.S. Running a magnet across your monitor screen as suggested by someone here has a slight possiblilty it will ruin the monitor. This is something for a pro to decide after a thourough diagnostic on your system.

try degaussing it with your monitor feat, it might have a horseshoe magnet look to it press menu on monitor to get to it, if u have a monitor like mine go to OPTIONS on the bottom line [you probley dont have a monitor like mine though, who'd pay 800 for a monitor anyway (god bless 21")] hope it helps, if that doesnt work try this (btw this is a last resort option) move all tapes floppys credit cards debit cards, hell just move everything... Get a Magnet and swipe it across the front of the monitor, b carful not to get near ur pc tower though cause if u do u might kill ur hard disc drive ( that is what ur o/s is on aka windows XP, MacOS X, hard ware dependent) i might need a pic of the screen displaying on a WHITE background (your desktop pickture needs to be set to None, get as camra out, set ur monitors refresh rate to 60, then take a picture, then send the pic to this email alexanderswalls@gmail.com and title the subject as IMPORTANT 159 MONITOR C, use all caps, it'll be ez'r to find. well hope it helps... if it dont, at least i tryed...
Source(s): fixed my Dell P1110 Ultrascan 21" Flat tube CRT trinitron with a magnet to clean the discolouration. (btw my color is norm again yay!) - 1 decade ago
Hei, simply degauss your monitor screen. Never shift the monitor while it is in ON status. These colour patches occur due to earth magnetic fields and other external magnetic materials.

It happened to me once. Turns out I had a virus. Cleaned, scanned and degragged, and then rebooted. Still there. Did a system restore and got it back to normal.

proceed as follows: reveal homes>Settings>stepped forward> Adapter>record all Modes If no different determination different than 640*480 is unavailable, then your video card has been corrupted.
