Backpain from prolonged standing?

If I stand up for any prolonged amount of time (maybe 30 minutes), my lower back begins to ache and becomes weak. Are there any suggestions as to best alleviate the pain and to prevent from happening again? I want to use a trip to the Chiropractor as a last resort.

Very good suggestions. However, I actually do exercise quite frequently. I do martial arts 3 days a week, run 2 days a week, and play basketball 2 days a week. I also do weight-training, which includes plenty of ab work. Ironically, the only time my back hurts is when I have to stand for a long time listening to a demonstration at my job.

    i have the same problem

    you need to strengthenen your back muscles

    mine is caused by a slighrt scoliosis (curvature) of the spine

    i found doing exercises on an inflatable exercise ball helps tremendously and puts minimal stress on my back

    bless your heart, i know exactly what you are talking about and the only thing i know to do is just sit or lie down if you can and rest for a few minutes. i use to work security at a mall which meant walking and standing a lot. when my back would start to hurt, my boss was compassionate enough that he'd let me drive the security van for a while to give my back a break. i take Advil or something similar to help with the pain if it doesn't get better. I'm like you, a chiropractor would be a last resort. Hope you find something that helps.

    Stretching- centain stretches can really help to alleviate back pain. If you do then in the morn and maybe even mid day your muscles won't start tightening and spasming as often. Also, when you can get off of your feet. Give your backa chance to rest a t some point in the day. A regular doc can suggest which back stretches will help. One more thing- use those therma care patches. They really work!

    Try strengthening your back muscles using exercise. When standing avoid standing on concrete, instead stand on a mat designed to cushion against back pain, and wear cushioned inserts in your shoes. You may also need arch supports. The right professional can hopefully diagnose your problem and find an inexpensive yet effective solution. I went to 3 different chiropractors and the best they could do is reduce the pain until walked out their office door.

    DJ: Try this. While standing use a small stool to put one foot on and, try to relax your back, after awhile change to the other foot.

    Instead Of a chiropractor, no insult intended, see a doctor. He may want to have your back X Rayed, you may have a pinched nerve or a bulging disc. Something is irritating your back, the nerves, find out first what the problem is and go from there.

    I have the same problem DJ, and here's what I figured out. You need to strengthen your abs and lower back muscles. In the gym, there are machines to help you do this. At home, do alternate toe touches and leg lifts, crunches, situps, etc.

    My doctor said I have more of a spine curve than normal, and to stop running. After a few days, I started exercises to strenghten the back and abs, and never had any more problems.

    the standing with one foot up is a good suggestion. i believe that you should see a doctor myself, because the pain is there for a reason! you need to find out what that reason is!!! pain is a warning that something is wrong, maybe you even pulled a muscle during martial arts or weight training...you may need time to heal, but what if it's more than that?

    I've been there! Two things -- get yourself one of those back braces. You may have seen people wearing them at the grocery store. Also, if you can get a small step stool, put one foot up on that while you're standing.

    When you go home, take a nice bath or hot shower and then sit with a heating pad.

    Maybe try wearing those back patches or getting some comfortable shoes
