Why does EVERYONE in the Careers & Employment section ask about...?
online jobs? Are these people afraid to leave their homes or are they just looking for get-rich quick schemes. I just don't understand it. If there was a business out there where you could sit in front of your computer all day, not leave your house AND make money, don't you think it would be all over in the news and EVERY person in the US would be applying for this job???

I believe it's mostly 'urban legend'. Hey, you like to 'surf' all day long? It's not REALLY work... well now, there's a way to get paid for doing what you like.
For those that think this is 'easy' money, it's tempting. I see it mostly as a scam (as you so rightly put it) it would be saturated with people IF it were real.

I don't think the people asking about these types of jobs are looking to get rich quick, I think most people are feeling the hit of the tightening economy right now and along with that some people have lost jobs due to outsourcing (as stated by poster D-). Rising mortgage payments, energy costs, gas and cost of living in general has prompted a lot of people to consider this type of employement. I think these same people would be happy to go out and get real decent paying jobs if they thought it were a viable route.
Also, I'm willing to bet that a lot of those people already have a job but need to supplement their income with an additional source and they think this might be the way to do it.
Don't be so hard on them.

Not everyone wants to do the same job. Some want to be doctors, some want to be lawyers, and I suppose a few want to be Indian Chiefs. This diversity is what makes our economy work. If everyone wanted to be in the road construction business, we would have a lot of roads but no cars to drive on them and no gas to fill the cars... The on-line jobs that you refer to are very difficult. Only a few people will actually be able to accomplish the task required to make a good living at it. I could explain to you how to succeed at a work from home job but by the time you finally understood, you would be earning $10,000 monthly and you would have to quit your safe & secure 9 to 5 job. Then the world would be missing a perfectly good _______???_______ .

Maybe they want to walk around naked! Think about working from home - you start pretty much whenever you want and don't have to dress or even shower!
Some people have kids and would save on child care if they could do this. I know someone who actually does medical transcription at home. She gets up a 5am and works until 7am, gets the family up and off to work and school, except for a 2 year old. She then watches her son until the child's 11 am nap time and works until he wakes up. She then babysits until her husband gets home at 5:30 pm and then he takes over, she prepares dinner, the kids go to bed at 8pm and she works until 11pm. It works for them. And she actually makes $28 an hour.
Many companies do allow people to work from home as long as they meet their deadlines. Some require you to report certaind days or number of hours a week.
But the number of companies on-line are not legit. They have tapped into this desire and prey upon it to make money without providing anything substantial.

What I don't understand is why ask the question when there are Thousands of previous questions on the same topic? Why don't they just search the board and look at the comments.
Every other question is "online jobs?" - perhaps Yahoo can just make a category alone of "online jobs" and get those off this category

As a telecommuter, I can say that once you have worked from home, you never want to return to the office. It's not laziness exactly, it's not being afraid the leave the house. For me, it's the ability to go watch a tv show and then go back to work. I can run errands and work at night. For me, it's not having to commute 45 miles into the city. There are many reasons.

i see where you are coming from but im a mum in the UK with a 6 month old with optic nerve hypoplasia and i want to stay at home with her. ok so you can say, why do you need a job then but its just nice to have a little bit of money coming in. I dont see anything wrong with it but i do think that once you have earnt a certain amount the authorities should no about it so that people cant claim benefits and be earning sh*t loads of money at the same time while some people struggle so much to try and make ends meat.
